Residential Colleges?

Hello,
Can someone inform me about the residential colleges? which one has best facilities, library, reputation, dorms, parties Greek live or whatever you believe is important to know. I know everyone things his college is the best, but try to be objective.
Thanks for your time :)

All of the colleges are great, really. They have slightly different facilities, but it really doesn’t matter much. Whatever college you are assigned to, you will firmly believe within hours–if not minutes–of arriving that it is the best. You have no choice, unless you are a legacy (you can choose to be in your parent’s college, or in a college other than that one)

All that being said, I would be remiss if I didn’t note that JE is the best.

LOL! I have to admit JE is not one of my favorites since now! I heard that Calhoun has a sauna (interesting!) and they through many parties, is it true? Are the common gyms/Rooms between different colleges a good thing or not in your opinion?

Honestly, I think there are only a couple of factors that make a real difference to anybody. Morse and Stiles are architecturarlly different, which some people don’t like, and are located a bit less conveniently. Freshmen in TD and Silliman don’t get the Old Campus experience. But the denizens of each of those colleges will still tell you that theirs is the best.

thank you Hunt  it was really usefull!! :)

Everyone I’ve spoken to is now very jealous of Morse’s renovations. Just saying.

Also, JE sux.

Unfortunately, it was removed around 2005 with renovations. I have fond memories of usng it in December and cooling down on the benches in the courtyard while steam rose from our bodies. A couple of cycles and then we replenished our body fluids at Yorkside.

Trumbull is the best. Even Sterling wants to be attached to it.

Legit though, all of the colleges have pretty well exactly what they need for their students… its very weird how it works out. Not to mention you will be making friends in all the colleges. Not to mention ALSO that selection is random, so asking our opinions of whats best where is, unfortunately, irrelevant. :(

WORD.

I legitimately fell in love with Trumbull within days of coming here. Not to mention, EVERYONE comes to our dining hall for food because we have the BEEEST dining. :)

^^ Pfft, Trumbull’s food is okay. Davenport is legit the most beautiful dining hall. We have a Waterford crystal chandelier. Oh yeah.

Also, Dport-Pierson have the best gym facilities, by far.

OK is still better than Dports poor excuse for food :P

And I will agree, Dport has its chandelier which is very nice… but HAHAHAHAHA at saying its the most beautiful. Pierson is nicer, Trumbull is better, JE is nicer, the list goes on.

Dport is prettier than Morse though. Take pride in that.

There exist three fundamental differences among the residential colleges.

Freshman housing - if you are assigned to Timothy Dwight or Silliman, you will physically live within those colleges during your freshman year. Otherwise, you will live with the other ten colleges’ freshmen on Old Campus.

Architecture - Morse and Ezra Stiles look different. If this actually is a huge deal to you, you are either an architecture major or a tremendous snob.

Location - It is generally agreed that for most purposes, Morse and Stiles are a bit more out-of-the-way than might be convenient. I personally think that Jonathan Edwards, Davenport, and Pierson are also in somewhat less-than-ideal locations.

There exist other minor variances in facilities, but quite frankly, they don’t matter. Pre-renovation Morse and Stiles were, to my understanding, decisively inferior to the other colleges in terms of facilities. By the time the class of 2015 arrives, pre-renovation Morse and Stiles will no longer exist. The new Morse is just as good as any of the other colleges, facilities-wise, and I imagine that the new Stiles will be as well.

And of course, unless you are legacy, you have no say in which college you are assigned to, so this quite frankly doesn’t matter. On the whole, Yale’s residential facilities are superior to what you’ll find at the vast majority of other universities.

The differences aren’t a big deal. I think Pierson and Trumbull have the best food, but Silliman has the largest dining hall.

Branford has Harkness tower, which makes it the best  BFA!

Even though Morse and Stiles are ugly, by the time you get there, they’ll have the best facilities of any college. Branford, by contrast, is by far the prettiest and also has some of the worst (basement) facilities. So it all evens out.

The only thing that’s a little ridiculous is the fact that some colleges get more funding than others, but that’s being remedied next year, so all’s well :)

Calhoun!!!

To be honest, you’ll be happy in whichever RC you get placed into. And Morse just got renovated and apparently it’s much better now than it was before.

The residential college system didn’t quite influence my decision to go to Yale (or even to apply, really), but I can’t stress this enough: it is an amazing system. No amount of written description can fully convey how close everyone in a residential college becomes… I can comfortably say that I’ve met and would gladly talk to 98% of the other freshmen in my college. While places like Princeton get a similar sense of community through things like eating clubs, Yale does it in a very seamless, inexclusive (is that a word?) way.

Literally all you need to know about the residential college system is that to be in Saybrook is to win the lottery. Freshman year you get all the convenience of living on old campus, while having your college RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM YOU :D. L-Dub is the center of the freshman social scene because we have our own courtyard, and the rooms are nowhere near as bad as people make them out to be. Saybrook itself is absolutely beautiful (all the beauty of branford without that tower blasting noise over your courtyard), is roughly at the center of the residential colleges, and it’s basement was renovated last year. Best Master and Dean combo (although Dean McKinley may be leaving next year =‘’'( ) and the dining hall has been completely reworked. Not to mention Saybrook is really intense about intramurals, unlike several of its contemporaries, so if that’s your cup of tea then you will be very satisfied.

One major thing that I’ll point out that is likely to affect the college system in the future is the plan to level the playing field in terms of the budget. JE, which is astronomically richer than the other colleges, and Pierson, who is also pretty rich (and davenport too I think) are going to have a per student spending cap placed on them. From what I can gather this is to make the poorer colleges (shall be nameless) feel better about themselves.

LOL, too bad L-Dub also has the ugliest, smallest rooms on Old Campus. :D

And not to mention that Saybrook is something to be scorned. If Master Smith said it, then it must be true :)

But the food still sucks. Just saying.
