residential CSUs

which CSUs are not commuter schools?

Cal Poly SLO and Chico State are the most residential of the CSUs.

SDSU is up there as well.

are you kidding me? SDSU is probably one of the most commuter campus. It has like what 30,000 undergrads.

Approximately 15 percent of SDSU students live in university-owned residence halls. Sixty-three percent of first-time freshmen live in on-campus residence halls.

About 20% of Humboldt State students live on campus, which surprised me as I assumed it was more residential that than.

Commuter does not mean “non-dorms”… it means a student “living at home” … not a student living in student apartments within a mile or two of campus!

Sonoma St. appears to have a mostly non-commuter student body…

Are we talking high number of student residents or most live-friendly campus? From what I hear, SLO and Chico fit both the best. Sonoma and Humboldt feel 50/50 commuter/resident, and Sonoma is smaller so even though most people live on-campus, it still isn’t that many. All 4 of these are very live-friendly.

I visited SFSU recently. SFSU is only a good residential experience if you are a city person because you will have it all. This includes a mall, restaurants, attractions, good ol’ bus, even a lake to jog around, and tons more that I haven’t explored yet. But SFSU is dead on the weekends and if you want to party, you need to set it up. Campus life is lacking, comparitively speaking, so if you are very “homey” you won’t have much fun. SDSU does not have nearly as many residents as commuters but the place is sure to have lots to do. CSU Long Beach: great for the beach, but there is a lot of crime. Sac, East Bay, Fresno, San Bernardino, LA, & Dominguez Hills: great if you want to join a gang or else they’re lacking in residential life. They have either large minority numbers, dangerous area, or both. Don’t get me wrong, diversity is good – just look at Chico – but not really with these. Monterey Bay has too many commuters, not a good campus feel, but dorms are huge and excellent. CSU Stanislaus is labelled as commutery everywhere but I would say it is similar to Humboldt residential population-wise.

EDIT: I only read the title. Silly me! Well, just know that even if a place has a lot of commuters, you can still have a great social life and lots to do in a commuter-dominated campus.

I wouldn’t want to attend a commuter school either.
