ResNet/Internet at UT

so they give you 500mb free? how do we access it?..ethernet?

Well during orientation I was able to access the Wireless network from the Jester dorm. It was a really fast connection, but I presume this was part of the 500mb per week limit.

I believe that ResNet is the one that you access through Ethernet in your dorm room if you would like more data. But now I’m wondering if you can access ResNet wirelessly throughout campus. What if I’m out in the campus and I run out of the 500mb free wireless that is offered but I have Resnet; will I only be able to access it with the ethernet cable in the dorm room?

Also, is there a way to check how much data usage you have used during the week?

Yes, on the Resnet website it has a meter.

Also, the 500mb is for the restricted wireless network. This is completely unrelated to Resnet. Resnet is the ethernet port in your room. They are very specific about that on all Resnet related websites, where they talk about making sure nobody else uses “your port” and such.

You can purchase wireless resnet instead of the ethernet port and get more than 500 MB on restricted.utexas per week.

Right, but remember that is still a separate purchase too. Your ethernet/wired and wireless can not be used interchangeably. I also hear that wireless signal quality (and speed) can vary substantially depending on the location of your dorm, which way your window is facing, etc. The dorms aren’t designed to get wireless internet signal inside. They usually do, but it’s not priority and they will not “fix it” if your room doesn’t get a signal.

Did they change the resnet? On the info page it shows choices as 4g, 10G and 15G per week. On the sign up page my ds’s housing page, it shows the choices as 4g, 20G and 40G. Is that just a mistake, or are they giving more now?

Woah, I think they did just increase it. I’ve had tier2 10GB selected for months now, and I go back to check and it’s tier2 20GB now. Same price. Very nice.

I saw that there’s a deadline for resnet (august 1st). can’t remember where i read it. BUT is there any way to buy resnet in the middle of the semester? or do you have to sign up for it before that one deadline?

It gets more expensive if you do not sign up along with your housing package.

Cost for getting with housing: [Resnet - Options: Pre-registration Signup](http://resnet.utexas.edu/options/pre-reg.html)
During the year: [Resnet - Options: On-site Signup](http://resnet.utexas.edu/options/onsite.html)

Thank you thank you

I just updated my resnet on my “My Housing” page for the first time. Is this wired resnet or wireless? It doesn’t say anything about it on the page. All it says is “You have chosen Resnet Tier 1.”
Also, for anyone who has signed up this way, was there anything else you needed to do to confirm?
I thought the deadline had passed, but it still let me do it.
Thanks!

ResNet is wired access in your dorm. You could probably take that wire and plug it into a router if you want. That way you could have wireless in your dorm. I’d put a password on the network if you do that so people in your hall won’t steal your bandwidth! :P

http://resnet.utexas.edu/options/wiredorwireless.html</a></p>

^^Look there.

HAHA! I didnt know you could use your roommate’s port.

Mwhahahaha.

What if you stream a lot of music through imeem, or watch a lot of TV shows/movies through Netflix and Hulu? Should I get the Tier II (20GB) package?

Also, if you’re on the internet on a library computer, does that count against your free wireless usage?

“What if you stream a lot of music through imeem, or watch a lot of TV shows/movies through Netflix and Hulu? Should I get the Tier II (20GB) package?”

I did all that and I had Tier I and ran out. Upgraded to the Tier II and I was good.
(Netflix ftw!)

Netflix is pretty much awesome. :D

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I don’t see how you would survive on just 4GB.

did anyone else sign up on their “My Housing” page? If so, did you get any sort of confirmation?

You can buy wireless resnet.

And using your roommate’s port is a bad idea for two reasons: 1. if he wants to get on you are SOL, and 2. you are committing theft and if you get caught you are going to face disciplinary action including restitution, eviction, and expulsion.

Just a heads up.

I was kidding. Lol.
And I know.

How many MB of internet would I need if I needed to use an ebook for CH 301? I am afraid that the 500 MB will not be enough but then again I won’t be using it for personal stuff to much either cause I won’t have time. Most likely I’ll only login in like once a week to facebook. Will 500 MB be enough if I don’t surf the internet too much, don’t go on youtube, AIM, etc. and only use it for school related stuff like looking up homework questions, using the ebook?
