I will be living in CKB next year, and will be using a macbook. I was under the impression that wireless was available with dorm rooms (in the newer ones), but this may not be the case? Will I have to use a ethernet cable to connect my laptop in my dorm room?

I’d use the ethernet if possible… Probably faster than wireless.

But I know Donlon will now have WiFi (woot!) so I’d hedge my bets that CKB will have it.

I lived in Bauer, and CKB definitely does have wireless…everywhere in the building. The ethernet is much faster, but the wireless is probably still faster than what you’re used to at home.

I only ever used ethernet if I really wanted to download something speedy, or needed to have a quick connection when waking up early for add/drop.

Perfect, I’ll be living in bauer as well haha.

I didn’t want to use ethernet and not have the freedom to type wherever i please. I heard the ethernet cords are really small, because it’s a hazard if they’re too large.

I would think you can bring your own ethernet cord and have it be as long as you like. I would think there is a plug outlet for the cable in the wall, not a cord sticking out of the wall. someone please correct me if that is not correct.

you can bring your own ethernet cord if you want. that way you can keep your laptop plugged into the wall and move it all around your room if you buy a very long cord. all the dorms also have wireless (redrover), but the ethernet connection is somewhat faster.

I got a nice 10ft ethernet cable. I’m pretty sure I could sit right outside my single and still be plugged in in the hallway (not that I’d want to…), but it’ll be nice to have that speed and still be able to move around a bit.

Even Balch? I’ll probably still bring a long ethernet cable for the speed, but I didn’t think that Balch would be wireless since it’s not exactly the most modern dorm, lol.

hmmm…i thought the ethernet cords were super long? maybe they issue short ones for the newer dorms? lol

i do know that if you want to take advantage of gigabit connection (hilc, ckbmews) you need to bring your own gigabit cord.

pretty sure balch will have wireless. they were doing “construction”/wiring last school year.

how about clara dickson?

i was there 2 years ago and we didnt have it. but not sure about this year.

maybe sarita the RA in dickson* can tell us :D

you will find that wireless slows down as everyone begins to use it.

"i do know that if you want to take advantage of gigabit connection (hilc, ckbmews) you need to bring your own gigabit cord. "

gigabit cord isn’t going to do much good if you don’t have a gigabit network card, and most computers still don’t have one. Not only that, gigabit isn’t going to do a bit of good for the internet. Speed to the internet is going to be a mere fraction of that gigabit speed. Even with your own cable connection at home, you are talking 5 - 10 mb to the internet, not anywhere near 1000 mb.

Now if Cornell has it so that you can create a LAN for gaming, then the gigabit will be a big factor, but otherwise it won’t make any difference at all.

As for wireless in Balch. I asked CIT and got two different responses.

here is what one person said

“The RedRover wireless network is provided for common areas around campus and there is no guarantee that students will be able to access it from their dorms. However, many dorms including Balch Hall are located close enough to common areas that many students are able to access the network from their rooms. However, access is not guaranteed and it is often the case that some students can access wireless while others cannot.”

and here is what another person said.

“I am writing in response to your question about acessing wireless internet. Wireless internet access is available in most locations on Cornell’s campus, via the RedRover service, including Balch Hall. In addition, your daughter will have an ethernet cable she can use to connect to the internet in her own room via Cornell’s ResNet internet service.”

So, I plan to bring a wireless router up and plug that into the ethernet port. Then she will have wireless regardless of the RedRover service. And of course, I will send a long ethernet cord as well for when the router fails as so many do.

gigabit matters if you’re using the campus network home to dc++ :D

CKB definitely has wireless, though you could still get your own router and set it up if you wanted the faster speed of the ethernet connection over redrover, since you’d be the only one using that router. I did it in Donlon last year since there was no wireless. However the trick with redrover is to use the secure one which has way less people on it so is much faster than the non secure one. Redrover non secure was often pretty slow. And yeah CKB has gigabit ethernet but you’d only ever get that speed on the local network considering Cornell at least last time they updated the faq on cits website only has one OC3 for the regular internet for the whole campus which is 153mbits or so. They say they have a second one for internet2(a network between various colleges to quickly transfer research files, etc), and most sites can’t upload stuff to you anywhere near that fast anywhere.
