Resources for SAT Critical Reading

Hey CC,

I’ll keep this short and simple. What resources are there that I can use to improve my Critical Reading Score from a mid 600 to mid 700? That’s right. From 660 to 750+. I don’t find the vocab particularly difficult (usually 16/19) but I find I mess up on reading comprehensions listed as a 2 or 3 or E.

Those three sentcoms would get you to 700…but I recommend Erical Meltzer’s book and Mike Barrett’s book for passage questions.

(and if 750+ is your goal, you’re going to have to tighten up that vocab and stop missing sentcoms. If you miss 3 sentcoms, you’re probably missing a few passage Qs for vocab-related reasons…)

Exactly. That is the exact thing. I am messing up passage vocab questions and a few sent comms. What do you recommend for that problem? I have DH 1 + 2 (haven’t looked at it yet) anything else you recommend? I actually made this post hoping you would comment. I know you said to someone else something like memorizing 100 words a day or something along those lines. Could you elaborate a bit more? Thanks @marvin100

Since you have ~40 days left, 20 words a day will get you through the books in 20 days, which leaves the last half of your time to study. Direct Hits will guarantee less than 1 sentcomp missed provided can eliminate choices effectively

A example pulled from prepscholar
Fred often used ___________ to achieve his professional goals, even though such artful subterfuge alienated his colleagues.

A. chicanery
B. diligence
C. bombast
D. disputation
E. consensus
The average student doesn’t know half of these words. But because you memorized direct hits you know what chicanery means and arrive directly at the answer without any time wasted.

It’s easy to cherry-pick examples, but honestly, in my experience this:

isn’t true for most students. Direct Hits just doesn’t have enough words. You can memorize both volumes and still need at least 1000 “SAT words” to stop missing sentcoms entirely, imo. That said, it’s a start and better than most approaches.

Totally agree with @marvin100.
