Response To CB Prompt

Topic: Can success be disastrous?

Essay...

Everyone strives for the holy grail called success.Though it is thought to bring ultimate satisfaction, often success leads to nowhere or has detrimental consequences. Three compelling examples from literature support my hypothesis.

There are situations when success unleashes stagnation. In George Orwell's "1984", the continent Ocenia was apparently progressing with rapid advances in technology. Yet freedom of speech was shunned and citizens were placed under constant surveilence of the "Big Brother". Moreover, the dictatorship and hegemony cast a shadow of gloom over the minds of people. Was this apparent success any better than regression? Even those who were instrumental for progress had to suffer the repercussions. Thus the effects of success can be dire if not pondered judiciously.

More importantly, the blind thrust for success often leads to later repentation. In Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations", the protagonist Pip was infatuated with the graceful Estella. Being lower in class, he strived to become urbane and classy when he inherited a fortune, regarding his former friends like Joe with contempt. Though he did manage to become a docile, mannered gentleman, Estella still refused his hand. When his expectation crushed around him, Pip looked back at life and realized how improperly he treated his near and dear ones.He was even more ashamed when Joe forgave him. So monumental ambition for success often accomodates a blow to our conscience.

However, the most significant ramifications of success are manifested in Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein". the eager student of philosophy, Victor, was so overwhelmed at discovering the secrets of life that he became a recluse from society to create life. Nevertheless, when he succeeded to make the creature, he was repulsed by its hideousness. Due to Victor's neglect, the creature avenged him by killing his relatives and his love, Elizabeth. Eventually, Victor himself died while chasing the monster. Thus, success can result in catastrophies.

In conclusion, we must foresee sagaciously the fruits of success before we undertake the quest for it. This is because a slight miscalculation can be a scar on our memory forever, tarnish our image or bring our own destruction. Only a judicious outlook can protect us from these and still lets us taste our success.

I would give you a 5. You use great examples and have a firm grasp of language. I would recommend ditching the third example, and instead completely develop only 2 examples. I felt like you needed to prove your thesis; you explained your example, but didn’t explain why it proved you right.

okay hmm…

I assume SpartyOn means 5 out of 6?

I think it is good. 5-6. I agree with SpartyOne, develop the first 2 examples, and ditch the last one. I hv to start posting essays too.
