Anyone care to share their favorite restaurants/hotels/shopping in the Dartmouth College vicinity?

Hotel-- the Hanover Inn right on campus if money isn’t a big issue. I know many find it expensive but by big city standards it’s reasonable. Ask for a corner room facing the Green. Shopping? Unless you mean for Cheddar and blown glass , it’s not a shopping Mecca. Restaurants to try would be the Canoe Club for upscale, the kids love Molly’s (I think the food is awful), Lou’s for breakfast.

If you’re willing to drive 20 miles or so the restaurants get much more interesting. Go to Chowhound.com and type in Hanover for some good picks.

Definitely the Canoe Club–the burgers are amazing! Hanover Inn actually has great food too, even if you aren’t staying there. Of course there’s Ben & Jerry’s (which is always good if you don’t have one in your hometown), AND there’s a WONDERFUL Asian-cuisine restaurant (I can’t remember the name!) which is located in the basement of a big shopping building…I’m sure someone can give you specifics on that.

We’ve been pleased with the Courtyard by Marriott in Lebanon-a bit less expensive than the Hanover INN. If you like a drive through the country, try the Woodstock Inn. I also like the Canoe Club and Lou’s. We like the Jewel Of India too.

In Hanover itself, not a fan of Canoe Club for anything other than appetizers. Molly’s and Murphy’s are good as far as sit-down restaurants go; Canoe Club is pricey, even compared to Molly’s and Murphy’s. Lou’s is good for breakfast, but lunch is also nice. Jewel of India serves passable Indian food – if you can make it for the Sunday lunch buffet, the quantity should make up for the quality.

If you want a cheap place to stay, there’s a funky old hotel in White River Junction that also has a hostel portion.

I was told by a D alum who has been going to all of the home football games for decades that there is a motel–I think it’s on the road going south out of Hanover towards West Lebanon Crossing–with a word like “Sun” or “Phoenix” in its name that is consistently the best deal. (Sorry to be so vague, but I’m sure you can google both of them.)

I thought the Canoe Club had pretty good food. I seem to recall some excellent hand cut fries with aoli, for example, and some reasonably adventurous salads. (It was so late by the time we ate, thanks to the kids’ conception of what is a reasonable dining hour, that it is a bit of a haze. ) I mean, it’s not Jean Georges, but it’s not baked haddock and surf n’ turf either. The menu does change to something more like bar food as the evening goes on.

Probably the nicest place in the area is Simon Pierce in Queechee- waterfall, glass making, etc., and a higher end restaurant. We try to go every visit. Hanover Inn is convenient. The Sunset Motel is on the river, clean, and a '60s style motel. Other than these two extremes, the Marriott Residence Inn is nice and close, and you can walk across the parking lot to Margaritas. Jesse’s steakhouse is a mile down the road toward Hanover.

Norwich Inn is a nice place to stay and have a good pub with its own brews. Stayed there for Freshman family weekend and walked to Dartmouth from Norwich. I always find it cool to walk from one state to another. Canoe Club is good was there this week. Try to go on Monday so you can see Marko the magician do his act at the table. It is becoming a family tradition. Have stayed at the Chieftian but beware of the bad sulfer smell from the water. The pizzas at Molly’s are pretty good. Dirt Cowboy has the best coffee. Go to Lou’s in the afternoon (closes at 3:00pm) for pie. Great apple, pecan, or berry pie. Went to a good restaurant in White River Junction. Cannot remember the name.

Sunset Motel! That’s it!

The hotel in WRJ is the Hotel Coolidge. WRJ itself is one of those places that time forgot. I find it rather cool for that reason, but it wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste.

the Chieftan Inn is also not too far from Hanover…I don’t know about the quality though, but it’s right on the Connecticut River.

I am NOTTTT a fan of the canoe club. the first time I was there, I ordered the paella…I swear they dumped a whole bag of salt into the dish. definately not worth 30$

murphy on the green is really nice. i like their burgers. molly’s is also popular. LOU’S BEAT THEM ALL. i’m not really a fan of EBAs, but ppl like their pizza/wings/wing night.

yama just opened. it’s popular. mai thai has really authentic thai food and their location is wonderful: if you sit near the window, you can see main street–really great during holidays when there are lights on the trees.

only three shopping places: gap, bella, and juliana. the last two are boutiques.

The Japanese Steak house in West Lebanon is pretty good. Molly’s is just fine.
