Well, I'm coming down to UVA with my dad today and was wondering if anyone has any restaurant suggestions. I believe I will be eating breakfast 2x, lunch 2x, and dinner 2x, so throw out as many recommendations as you can :D

We love Brixx Pizza which is in the Barrack’s Road Shopping Center on Emmet Street. I’ve also heard good things about the White Spot in the Corner. My D loves Bodo’s Bagels and we had some the last time we were there and they were very good - the location on the corner is hard to park at so I’d suggest their larger location with parking closer to the Barrack’s Road Shopping Center on Emmet Street.

I believe I’m staying at a Hilton 15 minutes from campus (all the hotels near campus were booked ), but we don’t mind driving to eat. I’ve been doing some research on ChowHound and have come up with this list:

BREAKFAST: Bluegrass Grill & Bakery (organic/healthy choices), Bodo’s Bagels (great bagels with just about anything you can dream of on top), The Tavern (a divey yet tasty breakfast tradition), and The Nook (recently renovated w/patio on the Mall).

BRUNCH: Fellini’s has the only Bloody Mary Bar in town and the DAM eggs are great. Don’t go for dinner or you’ll be disappointed ([Fellini's #9 Restaurant](http://www.fellinis9.com)), Mono Loco (Cuban/Mexican with great margaritas).

LUNCH: Christian’s Pizza, Marco & Luca’s dumplings, Riverside burgers, and Bodo’s Bagels are cheap and tasty.

CASUAL DINNER: Continental Divide (Southwestern food w/more than 40 tequilas), Shebeen Pub (South African grub http://www.shebeenpub.com), Thai 99 (best Asian in town), and Bizou (upscale comfort food). Aqui es Mexico

Are you staying at the Hilton Garden Inn? That’s just over on Pantops Mountain (really a commercial district on a hill). It’s not far at all.

There’s a greasy spoon, Jersey style diner over there called Tip Top. You will think you’re in Paramus if you go in there.

There’s a Christian’s Pizza and a Sticks Kabob Shop over there, if you want some quick food close to your hotel.

Keep in mind that there are four commercial areas in town:
The Corner - the area around the University
The Downtown Mall - the pedestrian-only shopping district
Pantops - busy road with lots of car dealerships on the east side of town
Route 29 - busy road with lots of chain stores and strip malls on the north side of town

If you will be here on a Friday evening, you MUST hang out on the Downtown Mall if the weather is nice. There will be lots of activity…street performers, vendors, kids, dogs, etc. April 15th is the start of the Fridays After Five season. There’s a free concert every Friday at the concert pavilion at the end of the mall. If you go, keep an eye out for a red food wagon called Carpe Donut. Even people who don’t like doughnuts like Carpe Donut. :)

OXO closed down many years ago. Cassis closed last year. This is a town full of restaurants and some of them come and go quickly. The best asian food in town is now Peter Chang’s China Grill, which is in the north wing of Barracks Road (the north wing isn’t as “chain heavy” as the regular part). [He’s famous](Peter Chang (chef) - Wikipedia).

UVAorBust, you’ve got a fantastic list going! Bodo’s is a MUST. Here’s a couple of places to add: Spudnuts (fantastic doughnuts), Guadalajara, Mona Lisa Pasta and Pizza Bella.

We also still go to Anna’s for Pizza. My husband and I had our first date there as first year, so it holds a special place in our heart.

If you go to the White Spot, try the Gus Burger:).

Christian’s Pizza is the place that most people rave about around here. There are locations on the Corner, the Downtown Mall, Pantops, and 29. NYCers won’t be impressed. Trust me. It’s fine, but it’s not authentic thin crust.

The same goes with Bodo’s Bagels. When I first got here, I was downright annoyed when I had a “famous” Bodo’s bagel. They’re the best of what we’ve got here, but they are not the real deal. I have carried hot bagels through security at Newark so I could bring them down for people to try. :)

Continental Divide is a personal favorite for a casual Mexican inspired dinner, but some people do not like it because it’s not authentic or traditional. BTW, the motto used to be too loud, too crowded, too smokey, too bad. Virginia banned smoking in restaurants, but the rest still holds true. Get there between 5:30 PM and 5:45 PM or you’ll be waiting on line.

For breakfast, I’d suggest Bluegrass Grill or Cafe Cubano if you are on the mall. If you’re driving, Blue Moon Diner and Tip Top are the best diners. Of the diners, Tip Top is old school. Blue Moon Diner is a little more hip. If you have granny with you, I don’t think Blue Moon is your spot. L’etoile has a lovely brunch. If you want to go all out, the Boar’s Head has a fantastic brunch.

OMG, oldUVAgrad - - it’s 30 years ago this year that DW and I graduated from UVA, and frankly I’ve not been back to C-ville much since then. Anna’s Pizza is still around? And the Gus Burger @ the White Spot? Can you still order a Grillswith there?

i almost always agree with its reviews. for breakfast, tavern is the best for eggs and pancakes, bluegrass grill and bakery is best if you want tofu in your breakfast, and blue moon is best if you like fancy bacon.

After reading Dean J’s post, I’d be inclined to stay away from The Tavern. We actually tried to get in there 2 or 3 years ago but it was packed so we moved on. I’m glad now that we couldn’t get a table!
Christian’s Pizza is good, Gus burgers at the White Spot tasty, LittleJohn’s on the Corner has deli type stuff. The Peter Chang restaurant China Grill was very good but the location and atmosphere were pretty nondescript. I think hanging around the Corner and Downtown Mall areas gives you the best glimpse of life in Charlottesville.

I forgot one more suggestion…Horse and Hound. That’s near L’etoile, Maya, Continental Divide, Zinc, and Blue Moon Diner. The area is being called “midtown” by some, but it’s the stretch between the Corner and the Downtown Mall.

The Horse and Hound does look like it has a very nice brunch. I realized it was Taste of China (also associated with Peter Chang before he left) that I have been to, not China Grill. Taste of China is #8 on tripadvisor so I assume it still is there. The Shebeen was okay but the location is kind of out of the way. Zocalo was interesting. Milan has a good Indian buffet if you like Indian but the location is kind of boring. Lots of good restaurants in Charlottesville! Have fun!

What great information! My family will be arriving somewhat late tomorrow night, and staying near the airport. Any recommendations for something quick but not fast food for us? Thanks!

Wow, thanks for this list! We are leaving early in the morning (6:00 a.m.) and are getting so excited! Am going to print these off for lunch ideas…looks like it’s going to be hard to choose one place for lunch. Maybe we will have to stick around for dinner too ;).

Our family loves Boylan Heights for the best burgers and turkey burgers ever and our son who’s a 2nd year, loves the Mellow Mushroom for pizza. Both are at the Corner.

[The Markets of Tiger Fuel](http://www.tigerfuel.com/gourmet_to_go.html) are just what they sound like…they are gas stations. The have super yummy sandwiches, though. The location in Ivy is called “Bellair Market” and some people don’t realize that the same markets are on 29 and on the other side of town.

There is a Market on the north bound side of Route 29 at the intersection of 29 and Airport Road. Look for the Exxon.
