Today through the Clemson University subpage, I discovered that Clemson has a restriction on double majors. You can only double major if one of your degree programs is a "Bachelor Of Arts" degree program. (You can't double major and get two BS degrees, I found this out through someone who found out they can't double major in Accounting and Financial Management because they were both BS degrees).

Do any other schools have restrictions on what you can or can't double major in? I always read these boards and hear about how students want to double major in this and that but I never realized there could be restrictions on this.....

Based on my scattered research, the majority of schools have restrictions on what can be used for double majors, and some schools don’t even allow them at all. The “majors/programs” page of a school’s website should tell you more when you know where you want to go.

@pierre0913:
I think you are confused about the difference between double majoring and double degree programs.

Double majors are where your get ONE DEGREE in multiple subjects (such as a BA in History and Economics or a BS in Biology and Computer Science). This can normally be done during a standard four-year undergraduate course of study.

A double degree program is just that, TWO DEGREES such as a BA in Physics and a BS in Engineering or a BA in English and a BMus. in Music. These programs often (but not always take five years).

Keep in mind that even beyond the school’s restrictions, departments may also proscribe certain combinations of majors. Most often I’ve seen that in the form of restricting double majoring in two very similar subjects (like accounting and finance).
