I am a father of rising senior thinking seriously about majoring in Engineering who has mentioned he is interested in Stony Brook (he likes the STEM focus). His stats are as follows:

Home state: NJ
GPA: 3.58 UW, 3.96 W
SAT: 730 CR, 740 M, 690 W
ACT: 34
High School does not rank, not NMS

According to the net price calculator on the SBU website, DS would qualify for an "Institutional Scholarship" of 14,720 scholarship (presumably all merit since our EFC > 70K). This would be a great value!

Can I take this to be reliable? What would he his chances for for an honors or scholars selection?

I would think that’s probably about right, yes. Honors College is impossible to say, because there are too many other variables, but almost definitely University Scholars.

Chris,

Thank you so much for your reply. This is great news. First thing my son said to me: “Great! Let’s take a ride up to Stony Brook and visit the campus.”

Sounds like a pretty awesome idea to me.

Chris,

I just want to let you know we’ll be up to see Stony Brook on 11/8 for the 12:15 campus tour and info session. My son is also trying to set up some time for a visit with CEAS (perhaps a tour or a Q&A session). Is there anything else we should look to do while we’re in the area?

My son has the common app all ready for him to click “submit” after he gets back!

Thanks!
Stuart
