To answer the question you’re asking in this thread’s title:
Expect a rejection, hope for an acceptance.

You have just as good a shot as anyone else. I would say that UPenn is a reach still, though it is for pretty much all applicants.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1590503-chance-me-uchicago.html

Excuse me for not impressing you. But how does including my extracurriculars in which I have been passionate for make an automatic rejection? You are misinformed and clearly you have not read my description thoroughly, but here are my justification on applying to dentistry which are all in my application.

My father is a dentist so naturally I have had countless hours shadowing him. Mentioned my passion for becoming a dentist since 2nd grade. Did numerous shadowing through dentists such as my scoutmaster, and by local dentists. Was part of the Honors Career Mentorship program where I logged about 30+ hours of mentoring dentists. Involved in the medical environment as I volunteer in the hospital since freshman year. Am part of the blood drives with NHS.

Your application is phenomenal in my opinion. To do so well in American schools when English is your second language, shows to me that you worked hard to achieve your goals. Dentistry runs in your family from what I read, and that influence on you can only help as you are working to keep that legacy alive. I am sure Penn saw that in your application and in your interview with them.

I think you get accepted. Also, I love Asian dentists. Seriously, you guys are the best. :)

@bigtimeseller232: Some cultures see the study of music as a requirement, and a rite of passage, while other groups see the study of music as a way to expand your mind and allow you to succeed at other studies even better than you would otherwise. The second is purely speculation, and research has been completed with mixed results. I would suggest you study cultural behaviors from more than just the American perspective before you pass hasty judgements onto others.

You made this thread expecting critsism yet you fight it? I understand you need to “defend” yourself but honestly why didn’t you mention all these ec’s when you first posted? We could have evaluated you much better. Just a thought. Anyways the acceptance for this program is extremely low. Like 3/130 one year or something (I forgot). I agree with Careful, expect rejection, hope for acceptance. You are as solid as anyone I’ve seen. Good luck!

His words were not those of constructive criticism. He spoke about my ec involving music as indications of AUTOMATIC rejection. I also did mention all these in broad terms (ex-did lots of work in dental clinics- shadowing) how am I supposed to fit all those in descriptive ways? This is a forum, not somewhere where I’d be able to fit my life story along with everything required for applying.

Moving onto your criticisms, thank you for your opinions! The program is crazy hard to get into, and I don’t have that much faith that I’ll get in. But I’m still hopeful for CAS :P

Of course I understand your point and got what you meant in your ec’s. Just showing his side. And ya its hard but did you apply for the other dental programs? I think NYU and the University of the Pacific have some. CAS should be much easier. I think probably low reach.

Yeah I agree with what that one guy said. You shouldn’t have any music ECs. dentists/doctors aren’t supposed to have souls.

Consider applying to Julliard.

@ pieguy321
I will be applying to NYU’s 7 year dental program as well

@ Petersuu
Haha, I appreciate your sarcasm. At least… I hope it was sarcasm. :P

Disagree with your retort entirely. Thankfully you are not an admissions officer. Good luck to the OP.

Dude. Please get off of my thread if you’re not going to stop making derogatory comments. I’ve read your other posts and you’re clearly a very hateful member.

“None of this was included above”-
First of all, did you not read my previous comment? “I also did mention all these in broad terms (ex-did lots of work in dental clinics- shadowing) how am I supposed to fit all those in descriptive ways? This is a forum, not somewhere where I’d be able to fit my life story along with everything required for applying.”
Second, I did have some parts of that above. Ex- Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at Blanchard Valley Hospital every week for an hour, Boy Scout stuff, NHS-blood drives, did lots of work in dental clinics- shadowing… etc Essays: Thought it was pretty solid, showed my passion towards the dental field and how UPenn could lead me to my dream career.

Also, do not make generalizations on who I depend on. My father has been separated from me since 4th grade due to my immigration to US from Korea and I only get to see him during summers. He is my role model, not my sole source of dependency.

Also, stop trying to pick fights with other commenters on MY post. Others’ posts are helpful to me, which you clearly have no desire in contributing. Please explain, what kind of ec for dentistry are you looking for? Just because I have another passion for music does NOT mean that I don’t have a passion for dentistry. Music is a hobby/interest I have. Dentistry is a future career path that I am driving myself to reach.

The truth? Lol! The nerve of some people. SMH.

I had gotten deferred. Ah well :P

Keep your hopes up. Be happy it was not a rejection!
