I'm currently in my second year of High School, and am looking towards majoring in theatre. However, I am scared that my resume is not up to par. I have participated in almost every show that my school has put on in addition to taking/ currently being enrolled in acting classes. On top of that, I am an honors student. What else should I/could I be doing? The last thing I would want is for someplace to reject me on the basis of my resume.

Any suggestions? Especially from those who are auditioning/ are currently enrolled in theatre programs would be appreciated. :D

You’re off to a good start. Additional things you could consider might be: getting cast in shows at places other than your home school --either community theatre, or sometimes other high schools will let you try out for their shows; attend one or more of the many summer theater camps, (there are lots of suggestions on this forum, and American Dramatics magazine has an annual issue devoted to them); if musical theater is your thing, try to find a good voice teacher and try out other types of vocal opportunities, too, like All State Chorus, school chorus, or local college community or opera chorus. Join, or start, your school’s thespian troupe and go to their regional and state conferences. Take a dance or martial arts class. Hope that gives you some ideas…

lifeonstage – if your audition skills are good, you will not be rejected on the basis of your resume. It sounds like you’re already doing all the right things; keep doing them and consider looking for some additional training, like a good summer performing arts camp or summer college program. It’s also not too early to begin looking at audition material – start reading plays to find characters that appeal to you and are appropriate.
