Resume resume resume!

okay, so i just read a bunch posts about “no resume plez”…and dude i worked and is still working hella hard on my resume. my counselor tells me to keep it no more than 2 pages. but still, the question is, do i need one for Penn??? and what format should it be?

dude chill.

my resume is 4 pages.

chanman r u applying to Penn too?
well that question was kinda dumb.
so it's ok to use a resume and it's ok if it's kinda long?

I think if you dont exceed 2 pages that is great!

I just typed the few most important activities in the online application... you guys sending in extra sheet of resume through attachment?? can someone show me how his/her resume looks like?

Let me give some of you a tip, and this isnt just for a Penn, but for the real world. Until you are about...25-30, your resume' should be a page maximum. No more. 60 year old retired executives have resume's that are 2-3 pages, sometimes 4. The adcoms reading your applications will only have a 1-1.5 page resume's and do get a little insulted when a kid basically is saying they think they are more accomplished. Coming from the brother of a human resources director, when she is going through resume's for those interested in a job, resume's that are over one page are rarely ever read.

So, I highly suggest you condense stuff (especially chanman), because they will not read your four pages. Sell yourself in one. Later in life, you only have 30 seconds to make an elevator pitch that could land a million dollar investment.

so, what do so suggest for me to do, since everyone seems to be sending in their resumes. I am an out of state student, so our activities work pretty differently. I don't have the opportunity to be involved in so many activities, cos our local schools emphasize alot on academics, and we have lsesons from like 8am-5pm on some days. each club we join will take at least 3 other days of commitment, at least 3 hrs each day. so, the maximum number of activities we can join is 2. (3 only if one is much less time consuming). Also, during june vacations, it's NOT holidays for us, cos exams are right after the vacation. December holidays are eaten up by daily club activities or overseas exchange. so.. there's not much time for part time jobs either. the only thing i have to put in my resume is probably some outside activities i took part in, small competitions (tt are not important enough to be in my online application) and exchange programmes.. i had gone for one exchange each yr.. wch is pretty rare.. do i put these down? anyone can kindly let me see your resume?

brhchs06 that sounds sophisticated; i'll listen to ya.

It doesn't have to be a quote professional resume. It can be merely an activities list elaborating on our ECs.

the question is how long the "elaboration" has to be though.
1 or 2 pages seems not even enough for just the hard stuff...

2 page maximum, that's what my harvard friend recommended, and my counselor recommended. They're not going to sit down and read everybody's 6 page reumes! But the forms don't show enough, so I think resumes are good.

thanx Zhang!
that sounds very reassuring. :)

hey are alll u guys sending resume seperate (via mail) after u submit online apps? i cant find a place to attach resume online..someone before suggested attaching it to the place where u upload a picture, but that might not be respectful

I sent my in by mail, be sure to include your ssn, dob, or school code.

where did u put those? also im kinda not sure about the form 1A stuff..if im aplpying RD when am i supposed to send those in.so i can get interview? i guess thiss question applies to most colleges to for RD? im lost

well, i have 4 pages of info on my resume, all neatly organized

but, i underline and Bold important facts

so even if they don't read the whole thing, i just want them to read the underlined stuff. The other info is just for display if they feel like they want to know more about me.

LOL, its inane to have resumes (call them activity lists on your applications, please) over 2 pages on a college application. Having a laundry list or thourough descriptions of your activities isnt going to impress adcoms. If you've read Elements of Style by Strunk, then you would understand the importance of being concise, short, and to the point.

I know a kid on CC who had an activity list of like 4 or 5 pages.....he got rejected.

Being longwinded doesnt impress adcoms, nor does it enhance any kind of presentation for that matter.

i'm taking ur words 4 it, DiamondT.

question though; by "concise" and "condense", do u/those who used these words mean that to make the descriptions shorter or just to delete the unimportant/minor activities entirely?

Both, 123z

Put only your primary actitivities (hopefully those are the ones youve obtained leadership positions, 2 or 3 main activities with substantial involvement is more than enough). My advice is to present your list in a light in which your passion to your EC's shines.

Colleges aren't impressed by grade/club grubbers who list every single organization that they are a part of.

When you actually write, remove superfluous phrases that dont add anything to the main aspects of the club or your involvement to it. Dont overuse adjectives when theyre not necessary. Keep everything short and to the point.

WHEN YOU TITLE YOUR SHEET, DONT PUT "RESUME" ON TOP, PUT "ACTIVITY LIST" cause youre 17,18 and are too young to have a real resume.

If youre looking for books to read on this stuff, Id recommend Hernandez's "Acing the application Essay" and for essays, Harry Bauld's "On Writing the College application essay"

omg DiamondT r u serious; i have the two books RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME right now.

another question: for my primary activities, I've been playing piano since 4; and i'm also sending a rec letter from my piano teacher as well as a tape of my playing. so piano seems a very big part of me and yes it is. do u think i should put it as the most important activity on top of everything else?
