Resume

On your resume for college apps, can you put down things you know will happen prior to it happening? For example could somebody put that they will receive an award for having 300 community service hours or is captain of swimming if they know they will be even if that hasn’t already happened when common apps are sent? (Since these things could happen during senior year before November or whenever college apps are due).

For captain of swimming, yes. As long as the coach has told you that you’ll be a captain, that’s fine.

For the community service award, I don’t think it matters; personally, I wouldn’t include the award in your application. It doesn’t add anything, and colleges will see your community service (and hour count) in the Activities section.

If it hasn’t happened yet, then I wouldn’t claim it. Just because you expect to be Captain isn’t a guarantee it’s going to happen. Lightening could strike and you could have a side-lining injury between now and September…

^Interesting point, but consider the following. Imagine that Bob plays soccer (a fall sport) and Bill plays tennis (a spring sport). At most schools, the captain status is awarded to the best senior, or something along those lines. Rarely is anyone besides a senior the team captain. So, as rising seniors, both know that they’ll be captains. Bob finds out in September and gets to put the leadership role of captain, but Bill will find out in March and therefore cannot. That doesn’t seem fair.

Regardless, I’d ask your coach if he will appoint you captain before you turn in your applications. Don’t think it’s a huge deal either way, though.
