Resumes?

I've been hearing mixed messages about including a resume in your college application-- my school seems to encourage it, although I've also heard that it makes you look sort of stuck up and presumptuous... I mean, we're only HS students...
So, do you guys recommend writing one up/sending it to the college or not, and why?

If you have something impressive on your resume that you don't have on your application, then sure, send it.

I wouldn't. I'd put only the most important, pertinent stuff on my app.

it's definitely not required, i didn't send resumes and was admitted to two ivies and a top university. as long as you put everything you want them to know on your main application then it should be fine. i think it is only a waste of time if you send a resume only repeating stuff or telling them things that don't need explaining. listing random things you did in 10th grade that you dont do anymore: i dont think things like that are gonna help you

are you saying that we shouldn't even bother mention achievements we had / things we did in 10th grade? I did a lot in tenth grade..

i didnt mean that; of course list important achievements such as that, thats why there is a section for listing awards and stuff.

bump........

............anyone else?

I have heard about things like colleges don't really prefer applicants send in resumes for they are for workplaces, not colleges. But I would say an explanation or elaboration on some somewhat arcane or ambiguous activities or award would be helpful. It saves a lot of guesswork for the adcoms.

I would use the resume for something that requires explanation/elaboration. I can give you a couple of examples:
my son worked on a GPS project that won a Governor's Award in our state and several other awards.
his theater group travelled to Edinburgh Scotland with the International Fringe Theater Festival.
Those don't fit the box on the application for ECs or awards in the traditional sense and require a short (very short) bit of explanation.
He used a bullet point format that listed some of those items.
If you do include a resume, make sure the college does not specifically say "no extra paper/pages" and do not include things like SAT scores or GPA that are obviously already on your app.
Also be sure to include your social security number and other information on the resume to make sure it stays with your file.

thanks! :)

oh yeah, what about if you truly don't have enough room to list everything?

Anyone have any links to good examples of college app resumes?
