What exactly is Retail management? (please tell me in details >///<)

is it really different from Fashion merchandising/marketing? or is it similar?
the reason i ask this is because, many good schools only offer retail management instead of fashion business... so i'm wondering which schools i should apply to =(

thanks SO much for any of your help!!!
thx thx thx !!

Retail management is more for any job in retail. It might not be fashion, it could be selling anything.
Fashion merchandising is selling fashion, or producing fashion.
So it depends what you want.
I can across the same problem. But, I really want more fashion courses than business, so I'm going to major in Fashion merchandising. PLus, i find fashion and apparel classes more interesting than the number crunching I'd do in a retail class.

You don't need a degree to work in retail or fashion. I doubt Versace himself had a fashion-oriented degree.

if i wanna work in fashion in the future, shold i just study business or is it better to study in fashion related major? (such as fashion merchandising)
caz i feel that the schools that have fashion merchandising aren't as good (academically) or as known :( i'm also not really sure about the fashion business..is it going to be popular in the future? or would i be in risk of not getting a job if i just study in a fashion-orientated school? pls answer and thanks so much again!

The risk of not getting a job is SKY HIGH. Not knowing anything about the industry, I can assume right off the bat that it's full of elitist phonies. So go to the best school possible.

I think you need to study what your interested in. I had trouble looking for colleges too because I want to major in Fashion Merchandising and not attend a school like FIT. I wanted to college experience with sports teams and a campus. I looked at Marist College which has Fashion Merchandising, and by majoring in Fashion Merchandising, you also automatically get a minor in Business. I know Cornell has an apparel major and so does the University of Delaware. Also, keep in mind you could always mjor in Fash Merch and minor in something else, or the other way around.

Retail Management and Fashion Merchandising are basically the same thing...you'll probably have more interesting, diverse courses in fashion merchandising but they're both geared towards the retail industry unless otherwise stated. My school has a "fashion management" major that is more geared towards styling/marketing/runway production than retail. It varies by school so look at each program.

I'm personally transferring to another school and I'm going to major in something else. Fashion Merchandising is really boring and unnecessary...anything you can do with it you can do without it (or with no degree at all). Get into the best school you can and study something interesting. There's no guarantee you'll get the "job of your dreams" and this industry...it's all about networking/connections/family lineage.

KindlyCuddly,

Can you tell me which school you're studying at now?
and which school are you transferring to?

thanks!

You may not need a degree in work in retail, but you do need a degree to obtain most management positions.
