Retake 720 critical reading?

My son has taken the SAT once without a prep course. With a 720 in cr, 740 math and 780 writing would it be worth it to retake to bring the cr score up? He's looking to apply ed to Dartmouth?

No, your son’s SAT scores are excellent.

Once you hit 7__ it’s totally unnecessary to retake.

Your son’s 1460 CR + M puts him a little above the median SAT at Dartmouth (middle 50% 1330-1550). That’s enough to make him a highly competitive candidate of his grades, ECs, essays, and recommendations are commensurate with these SAT scores. As it’s highly unlikely a re-taking would bump him up into the top quartile (>1550), even on superscoring, there’s little point to it.

On the other hand, with a 15% acceptance rate, Dartmouth’s pretty much a crapshoot even for a candidate with your son’s credentials, so I’d be making a list of matches and safeties in the event the ED doesn’t work out.
