I took the March SAT and got an 1850 (520CR 680M 650W) and the May SAT and got a 1990 (600CR 770M 620W). It really irritated me because it was so close to 2000. Really? 10 points? I was also pretty peeved because my writing score went down. I really don't want to take it again because I don't want to look desperate to colleges that don't participate in score choice. I'm looking at really competitive schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford etc. Is it even worth it to take it again for a 2000+?

The real question is will you do better in retake? Just retaking the test may not get you better score particularly at the 3rd attempt. For schools like Harvard, they don’t really like students taking it multiple times. Currently, you have a superscore of 2020. If you can improve in any section, you will have an even higher superscore. If 2000+ is your goal, you have already achieved that for many schools. Nevertheless, just being marginally 2000+ would not give you any better chance for these schools. Retake it if you can get at least 2200+ in superscore, otherwise, your chance would still be as low as with your current score.

Thanks for the advice. Reading has always been up in the air with me and math has always been my best subject. Not sure why the writing is so low. I’m a pretty decent writer for the most part. I think I definitely can improve a third time around, especially since I have that irritating thought of it only being 10 points off in the back of my head for motivation.

If you’ll do better next time by 50/+ points, you should probably take it again

Try to practice extra hard in reading and writing (writing is generally viewed as the easiest to improve). I would say to try for at least a 2150 or a 2250 superscore. If you look at SAT statistics for students at those schools, even a 700 in a section might barely put you at the 25th percentile, where really, if you’re an unhooked applicant, it would be much safer to be near the 75th percentile. (Safer is used as a relative term of course, there is no such thing as a safe SAT score for schools that selective)

Are you just applying to these schools for the prestige? I would highly recommend that you look around; you might just find a school that you like even better! It’s important that you have a good range of matches and safeties as well as reaches.

Yeah definitely go for it. I got a 1970 on the May SAT and I definitely plan on taking it again. Well, it was my first SAT so of course I’m gonna take it again…

Youre in luck because the fact that your writing is fairly low (I mean, its good, but low for CC) and writing is the easiest to improve upon, meaning you have tons of room to improve and it should be fairly easy to do so.

You should definitely work on your CR as well, you just want to make sure it doesnt go down. If it goes up, awesome! But just make sure it doesnt go down. Your main focus should be on writing (in my opinion), because you should be able to easily increase it to 700+ over the summer, which would give you an 80+ point boost. Just study grammar rules for writing and do as many CR and W practice sections as you can. I didnt mention math because its 770… its giving your whole score a huge boost so just make sure it doesnt drop.

Just my two cents. Good luck!
