Retake a 2190?

Hello,

I got a 2190 on my SAT last November (Math: 750, CR: 730, W: 710) and was thinking of taking it again this November (already registered).

My dilemma is that I am almost certain that I'll get lower than 700 on both CR and Writing this time around because I completely fluked on guesses in CR last time and haven't studied at all this time.

However, I'm certain I can get 780-800 in Math this time which would bump up my superscore by 30-50 points. But will getting less than 700 on the other 2 sections look bad? I have to send in all of my scores to Cornell, so they might perceive the drop as something bad right?

Other schools I'm applying to are GTech, UMich, Stanford, Berkeley etc if it matters.

I would NOT retake.

An 800 in math isn’t gonna help you so much more than a 750–it’s a matter of 1 or 2 stupid mistakes. Colleges don’t reject or admit people over a few arithmetic mistakes.

A 2190 makes you competitive for Cornell. If you were going for HYP you would need to retake–kind of need a 2300+ for there.

^Yep you’re done! Apply away & GL.

@SuperN0va, I thought that it was a competitive score too, but someone showed me this yesterday:

[Cornell Engineering: Class Profiles](http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/admissions/undergraduate/why_cornell/class_profiles.cfm)

My Math score is barely within the mid 50% range. I know it’s just a couple of mistakes but doesn’t this show that Cornell’s College of Engineering admits a lot more students with higher stats than me?

Hmm…

Those math percentages are extremely high, but they are just representative of the types of kids they admit.

Almost all their applicants got 0 wrong, 1 wrong, or 2 wrong on the SAT. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the admissions committee favors people with 800 over 760.

To determine if that’s the case, you would need to see how many students with say, 790s were admitted, and how many with 750s.

well, since you registered, take the test, then cancel the scores immediately

@SuperN0va, Yeah, to be honest, I see no difference between getting a 750 and 800, but I don’t think that’s the case with Cornell (or most selective colleges for that matter). Unfortunately, I have no access to that kind of data though.

@anjuna, that’s a good idea, I didn’t consider cancelling. I’ll probably end up doing that if I felt like it went bad. However, is a 750M + 730CR an okay score to apply to at the CoE? Does it put me under other applicants (I know admissions are hollistic but let’s just assume they aren’t)
