So I took the SAT freshman year and got a 2260. Then I took it this year and got a 2270. 2290 super scored. Is this good enough for HYPS? The breakdown for the 2270 was: 680 Critical Reading (ouch), 800 math, 790 writing.
Should I even bother taking the test again this October, before the ED/EA deadlines to try to get 2300+ ?
Thanks.

The overall score is great. And you don’t need to retake it. But the 680 is low. What if you just take it to try to improve CR? Of course, if you can’t duplicate a M800 and a W790+, don’t bother.

This post is expert ■■■■■■■■.

If you think you can improve the 680, retake it. A score below 700 in a section can hurt you.

retake and try to bring that reading to 700+ preferably 750+

I dont think you should retake it. Of all the sections reading is the hardest to improve on, and even if u do pull it up a bit u never know u might have a bad day on one of the other sections. Anyways 2270 is an awesome score :)

Similar situation to me.
First time I took, I got 800M 800CR 680W. I decided to retake on the advice of my gc and a couple of good friends. ended up with 800M 800CR 780W, and it was definitely worth it. thing is, be prepared to spend a lot of time on that one section.

I’m pretty close to that as well. I also got a 2270 (740 CR, 790 M, 740 W), but just one one take, and I know I could bring my math up to 800 – I incorrectly gridded the one answer I got wrong – and also the writing – I had never actually practiced the essay before, so I got a 9/12. But my impression is that colleges really don’t care all that much about SAT scores as long as you’re roughly around their range, and that 20 or so points won’t really make a difference as long as the rest of your application is good enough. Personally, I would look at the questions you got incorrectly by getting a score report, seeing whether they were dumb mistakes that you could avoid on a re-take or if they were comprehension/vocab errors, which are really hard to improve upon. Either way, if the rest of your resume is up to par, I doubt the 680 will hurt your chances for admission (unless you plan to be an English major).

First of all, to the OP, your name is beaslty and epic!

That is a wonderful score, but I would have to say that the Ivies and similar schools do like to see 700+ in all sections, so I would retake to boost that section. Plus, if they do superscore, it’s much better for you! Best of luck! :)

Yeah, I mean, honestly, if you look at Harvard’s median SAT score range, their range for CR is 690-800. The kids that get in with 690s are generally hooks, URMs, etc. If you are a URM, then thats okay. Also, if you could get a 750+ on the Literature SAT II or a 5 on either of the English AP exams before your junior year is over, that would be good too. Overall, a score in the high 600s is low for the Ivies. They want the best, and to be honest, critical reading is viewed as the most valuable section. If you are in AP Calc your junior or senior year, they expect you to get a 700+ on the math. The reading is the one section where you can’t just memorize some formulas or grammar rules and do well. Honestly, your SAT score is AWESOME, but I would retake it to get that 680 to a 750+. In my experience, kids from my school that got into Harvard with a 600 something in ANY section had a serious hook: recruited athlete, professor parents, etc. If you can get those scores in Math and Writing once, you can get them again. Also, some schools do not care about writing. Your CR/Math score is 1480, which there is nothing wrong with that, its just subpar for HYPS. Ideally you would be 1550+. Honestly, the decision is yours, and generally I do not condone retaking with a 2250+, but this an exception. If you want to really stand a chance at HYPS, you need to be in their score range, and you are not for reading. Study, try again, I’m sure you can bring it up.

sorry, a bit off topic but what does URM stand for?

^ haha i pwned you!! pigs got 2290 NOT superscored!! muahahahahhahahahaha

lol sorry had to do that…no don’t retake…your score can go downnnnn

^sometimes you guys need a reality check
stop worrying so much about a little score
you guys make it seem like you need a 2250+ to get into ANY college sheesh…in the normal world, people get into places like UCLA, berkeley blah blah with 1800s…senior friend got into nyu this year with an 1800 something
it’s actually alottt easier to get into good colleges than you think…and well harvard is another issue because no one has a great chance

andd actually it depends on what grade the OP is in, if he’s a sophomore then…sure go for it
it’s better to just do it once and not look back though

680 retake…
freshman year 2270
thats AMAZING!

My friend’s brother got in with 800 math, 790 writing, 630 cr to HYS. Not affirmative action or whatever case either. So don’t retake…don’t be neurotic.

if you honestly think you can do better on CR, then go ahead and retake it.

I got a 2200 on mine, 710 CR 700 M 790 W, and I’ve decided to retake because on practise tests, I was doing a lot better on CR and I got an 80 on my PSAT CR. I don’t think 2200 is a bad score. I just think I can do better on the CR portion. and hey, maybe even the math.

There is no point in retaking. Only if you can get out of sight of your current score range by improving at least 50 to 60 points on that section then that would maybe make a tiny difference. Really, you are already past the point of needing to retake…
