Retake a 35 ACT?

So, I took the ACT for the first time in April and I got:

English: 36 (34 with 10 essay)
Math: 36
Reading: 36
Science: 32
Composite: 35

I was really happy with my score, but since I want to major in neurology, I thought that the 32 in science might look bad. On practice tests I've gotten 34/35 on science, but I'm not sure that I'll get as high a score on the other sections if I retake it. Should I bother retaking it in June to try to get a higher score in the science section, or should I just stick with this one? The thing is, I've only taken it once and I feel like I could do better...I'm just not sure what to do! By the way, I'm looking at top tier schools (HYP). Thanks!

No, you are over obsessing your scores. Scores are not everything. After a benchmark, the scores do not mean anything. A 36 might look good, but will a college reject you because you had a 35?

Do not retake. You are done.

Nope. Anything at about a 34 or higher would be perfectly fine.

No!!! I would kill for your score! Lol. Your score is fine, you should be satisfied with what you earned.

You are being so greedy, i mean you could get into any college. people would do anything to get 28. I mean come on!

If you have the money and are willing to spend the time, there’s really no downsides to retaking it. But it’s probably not worth it.

This question is asked frequently. You might want to read previous threads to get other insights.

This question is one that others cannot really answer for you. Yes, a 35 is an excellent score, and good enough for any college. How interested are you in retaking it for your own satisfaction? Do you have the time and money to do so?

My children both retook the ACT to raise their science scores, the lowest score by far for each of them. My D raised her science score from 27 or 29 (I can’t remember which) to 36, for a composite of 35. My S raised his science score from 30 to 36, for a composite of 35.

You got a 35…

OMG retake and you would not get into any colleges if you don’t get straight 36s. 36 36 36 31 = FAIL, it has to be all 36s.

Lol I’m retaking a 34 cuz one score dragged me down, so np doing that as long as uk that u can raise that score dragging u down

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using CC

Honestly, for ANY school a 35 is great and you don’t have to worry about that score any more.

However, if you’ve only taken it once, I see no problem with taking it again. If you’ve taken it twice or more, do NOT take it again. Some colleges demand all scores and if they see that you’ve taken it 3,4,5 times, it might look bad. Moest everyone takes their ACT/SAT once or twice.

I wouldn’t retake. I got a 32 (31-R, 36-M, 30-W, 30-S) and didn’t retake that.

OMG are you kidding me? No, you should not retake it. Do you know how many people get ACT scores that high? Like no one. Your scores will impress any college.

“I’ve only taken it once and I feel like I could do better”

I want to punch you.
But seriously, DON’T retake.

I don’t think the science portion of the ACT is an accurate representation of how well you will do in college science classes… Don’t retake.

Just because some people would “kill you” for a 35 on the ACT doesn’t mean you don’t have to retake it. Perhaps your standards are simply higher than everyone else’s, or maybe you just want to absolutely MAXIMIZE your chances of gaining admission to top-tier colleges. If that’s the case, then it’s really up to you. If you think it’s worthwhile and you think you can improve your score, go for it.

You are not being greedy, you are not being ridiculous. True, very few people get a 35, but even fewer get a 36. Maybe that point is worth it to you. Just don’t obsess over it.

I would. I probably got a 34 or 35 on the act this morning because of the science section–I ran out of time so yea, ■■■! I know I’m going to retake it if I do. Or maybe I’ll take the SAT. I like it better based on the practice tests I’ve taken (there’s more time and I’m a slow reader). Maybe you should take the SAT…?

I completely agree with jmu. retake it if you wish. a lot of people on here are just jelly and will tell you not too.

retake it and if the score sucks (worse than your 35), just get act to delete it. you don’t have to tell colleges you took it again and again b/c, unlike the SAT, the ACT let’s you delete scores (for a fee, i believe)

We’re in the same boat (with 35s), but I miraculously managed to score a 36 on science without prepping. The best advice I can give is to not think TOO much about the actual scientific nature of the questions and to treat it as an examination of your ability to read bar/line/pie graphs. It’s really just another critical reading section with numbers and science-y words. If you’ve decided to retake (in perhaps October?), just practice science a lot.
