So, I took the ACT for the first time in April and I got:

English: 36 (34 with 10 essay)
Math: 36
Reading: 36
Science: 32
Composite: 35

I was really happy with my score, but since I want to major in neurology, I thought that the 32 in science might look bad. On practice tests I've gotten 34/35 on science, but I'm not sure that I'll get as high a score on the other sections if I retake it. Should I bother retaking it in June to try to get a higher score in the science section, or should I just stick with this one? The thing is, I've only taken it once and I feel like I could do better...I'm just not sure what to do! By the way, I'm looking at top tier schools (HYP). Thanks!

I say stick with it.
If you want to look like you’re good at science, take the SAT II Chem, Bio, or Physics exam and get an 800. The ACT science section isn’t really science anyway.

Don’t retake it. The science section is probably the least important section of the entire test.
It doesn’t even test "science’ knowledge anyway, it’s more graph interpretawtion.

i agree with sophias advice. your time would probably be better invested taking subejct SAT’s if you want to increase the impressiveness of your test scores i think.

it’s really not certain that you would be able to replicate those 36’s even if you raised your science score to 35-36.

No. Don’t.

Colleges won’t reject your application just because they see a prospective (very likely to change) neuroscience major who got a 32 on the Science component of the ACT.

WHAT? NO. DON’T RETAKE IT. your scores are perfectly fine. I don’t understand why people think it’s necessary to get perfect scores to get into Ivy Leagues. Near-perfect scores are totally fine.

No need. (10 char.)

“By the way, I’m looking at top tier schools (HYP).”

Do you have any hook?
Do you have any national (international) award?
Did you save a community from a disaster?
Are you a “developmental” applicant?
Are you attending an elite feeder school?

If not, you have very slim chance to get into HYP even though you get 36.

You might get admission boost if you get 37.

OP, even if you checkmark everything above, your chances are unpreditable at HYP+. Your sci IS relatively low; improve or take relavant SAT IIs.

No. Most colleges don’t even look at the science section - they mostly care about math and reading, which you got perfect scores on. Leave it.

Well, I took the Chem SAT II in May and I got an 800, so I hope that will make up for the science a little. And 20more, I completely understand that it’s nearly impossible to get into these schools, but I just wanted to give you an idea for what I was aiming for.

And I do have a national award :)

A 35 on the ACT! Why would you want to retake something like that. If I got that score, retaking the thing would be the last thing on my mind. That score is really good. Students will do anything for that score. It’s like getting a 2375 on the SAT and coming on CC and creating a forum saying, “Retake a 2375 SAT?” Goodness CC, lower your standards, not everyone is perfect.

this is why people hate CC. welcome to the 35 club…

I wouldn’t retake it. The making-sure-you-have-strong-science-SATII’s seems like a much better option. (:

Besides, the Science portion of the ACT really has little indication of your science knowledge. It’s all just lab data interpretation anyways.

setup, this is one of the very few cases where I would recommend looking at it once more, especially because you said it’s first time taking it and becuase you got 34/35s on your ACT science. ACT science is one of those things where it’s different taking it in the testing atmosphere, and if you take it a second time, you would probably do better. (speak from experience, 36 sci).

Well, I think it matters what the adcoms think, not us ;)

Also, just noticed you’re coming to Cornell next year haha- what school?

Ahah, true, true.

And I’ll be in the College of Engineering next year. (:

OP, you shouldn’t retake it.

^ …Is there a reason why you’ve just been copy+pasting the entirety of WongTongTong’s posts?
