My grades are undergoing a major upwards trend. I did absolutely horrible on two APs I took in Sophomore year (last year). So I think to help show my upwards trend I'm going to take the AP exams in the AP classes I'm in and retake Human Geo (which I got a 2 on) and Psychology (got a 1 on). Do you think this is a good plan, and if I do good do you think it would help?

What were your grades in those classes? That is much more important than an AP score. You don’t have to ever reveal those AP scores to any college or university, so they will never know what your scores are unless you have them sent.

It would be a much better use of your time to do the work necessary to get better scores on the AP exams for the classes that you are currently enrolled in, and (of course) better grades in all of your coursework.

Given that you desire Hopkins, retaking those courses would be a total waste. You need a lot more rigor in your schedule to be competitive for JHU. Human Geog and Psych are so-called AP Lites. Instead, take Chem, Bio, Physics, APUSH, Euro, Calc BC, Eng Lit…

You were a sophomore in high school trying to teach yourself college-level material. Honestly, don’t worry about this! There are much better uses for your time. If you had taken real live classes in these subjects you probably would have done no better because, I repeat, you were a high school sophomore.

If you want to know how the JHU admissions office interprets repeated AP exams, email them and ask.

They have them posted, and like I said they require all AP scores and they take them into consideration. They refer to them as “optional but strongly recommended” type of tests.

I think that it would be very unwise for you to send in APs scores of 1 or 2 – either self reported or official.

My reading of the JHU requirements is that the manner of sending AP scores, and the timing for sending them is really up to the applicant. I encourage you to triple check before you send in such low scores. They will simply bias the reviewer of your application.

Retaking the AP exams in Human Geo and Psychology does not seem like a constructive exercise.

The forum on the Hopkins website makes it quite clear that ALL AP scores must be self-reported (official reports are only required after admission if credit is desired). I would include somewhere in your application that these tests were taken during your sophomore year based on self-study, so the scores can be put in context.

If we say no the first time, what makes you think we will say yes the second time. Your basically just asking the same question. Dont stress it, enjoy life while you can.

you really are wasting your time OP. A couple of self-studied AP scores, in so-called AP lite courses, will not make up for a lackluster gpa. So, the answer again, is ‘No’. You are better off acing other tests (SAT/ACT/Subject Tests) and spending the time to polish ECs and your essay.
