Since it’s his first time and he’s only a junior, I say he can retake it, but only if he feels he can significantly improve his score (i.e. take practice tests and get 2400).

However, 2300 is an awesome score, and will definitely work for even the Ivies, so I say he’s fine with the SAT component. Congratulations!

I hope he took the PSAT in October; he should have scored in the range for NMSF. Testing priority should shift to SATIIs and APs. He should take those in the spring as the courses covering the relevant SATII material are ending, and he is as sharp on the material as he can be.

If he got a 2300 single setting, first time, he should be able to come closer to 2400 if he took it again. With superscoring, the M and W scores are in the bag; no reason to worry about them going down. I do believe that elite school admissions do go up as that score rises. But not if the other scores are not there as well. So only take the SATI again if there is time and energy after all the others are done.

independent of the score . . . retake as a end of year junior or as a starting senior

BTW, in 2010 6925 students worldwide got a 2300 or better at one sitting

so kid is already among elite by that measure, and doing “better” will not add that much to kid’s profile . . . so no harm in NOT retaking

and remember . . . the Ivies turn down ~ 3/4 of the kids who have 800s on M or CR

P.S. UT84321 is on the mark about what tests to concentrate on

If you have the time and energy and you’re really ambitious…

see, I’m sortof in the same boat. I got a 2300 as well but the breakdown was: 770 -CR 780-Writing 750-Math. In my case I was thinking that retaking would be good because I have margin of improvement in math. Right? I am also a Junior and this was my first try

Take it again, if for no other reason than the satisfaction of getting a least one 800. At least one is within grasp.

I think it is more impressive if you send your score report and have just one sitting, 2300. But then again I’m not involved in the admissions process. I wouldn’t retake it.
