Hi all! I just got my June SAT subject test scores back, and I'm sooooo angry at myself... I KNOW I can do better... I got a 760 on Math level 2 and 780 on Bio M... I could've sworn I got an 800 on Bio, but urgh... I was wondering if I should retake, since I'm studying for USABO anyway, and I could try out Dr. Chung's. I'm really thinking about studying Molecular Biology in college, so a 780 really ticks me off -_-... Thanks!

Bermp.

Don’t retake, those scores are great for any college

Move on; don’t retake.

I know correlation isn’t causation, but if I apply to a school that’s insanely steeped in mathematics–say, MIT–would it be to my disadvantage? I’m just ticked off because I have a 108 in my AP bio class, and I have a 100 in my math class (which fulfills the requirement for Math II)–both being the highest scores in them. Are they honestly completely fine?

If you are accepted to MIT it will not be because of your SAT subject scores. Conversely, if you are rejected it will not be because of your SAT subject scores. Focus on other elements for your application.

@skieurope Thanks for getting back to me :P… I’m just a bit worried that my scores could be the reason that they take another student instead of me. For example, a hypothetical student is comparable to me, but his scores are perfect, so he supposedly is more academically qualified. Do you think that ever happens? The thing is… I’m a rising junior, so I have time. If you still think I should chill, then, I guess I shouldn’t question the experts :P! Thanks once again!

After test scores, other more subjective factors come into play, such as your transcript rigor, GPA, teacher recommendations, EC’s and essays. Use the time that you would have spent prepping for a re-take on writing some stellar essays

Anything 770+ is good. Study for other things.

@cso1640 But it’s 760 O_o

You won’t get rejected because of those scores, and improving them won’t improve your chances. Don’t retake, trust this random guy on the internet ;)

I got a 760 on both lol. I really feel like there is no point to retake because it is not going to be the deciding factor in whether top colleges accept me or not.

My son’s friend had 232 including 80 for math on the PSAT. The friend didn’t get 800 on either the SAT math or the Math II (780 on both I believe).

Anything in the 700s is good, the further in the better.

The only time 800s really matter is in cases like my son, where his grades aren’t as good as his test scores, so IMHO getting 800 on the SAT Math and Math II subject was important for him. Time will tell.

On that note, he’s a junior and not retaking any standardized tests with a 2090 SAT from June and 800 and 720 on Math II and Chemistry from May. If you are not a junior yet, yes I would consider retaking, especially if those were your first tries.

He went from 710 to 800 on both the SAT Math and SAT II Math II, from first try to second try. Being familiar with the test helped him for the math but not the CR and Written.

“I know I can do better” has to be tempered with “It would be wiser to spend my time doing something else”.

@rhandco Yeah, I’m only considering retaking because I’m going to be a junior this upcoming school year, and it’s also my first try at any type of SAT. Perhaps “math maturity” might help me out if I were to retake?

@Newdle my bad, I only saw the 780 on Bio. For Math II, I would consider retaking it only if you think you can get an 800. The percentiles for Math II are pretty low, as getting an 800 can sometimes mean 85th percentile or 90th percentile. If you’re reaching for top schools, sometimes an 800 can help. Then again, if you have stellar scores/grades, SAT subject tests won’t really matter.

What math are you taking next year?

@cso1640 When it comes to academic drive, I don’t think I’ll have a problem with showing that on my application. I’ve even talked to my counselor many times to set up independent studies, etc., and I think she sees my genuine interest and passion for both learning and setting precedents so that others in my school will have a chance I wasn’t lucky to have early. Eh, but I do have 2 A-'s… I am going to be taking AP Calculus I (AB) next year, and I’m actually studying AP Statistics by myself right now as an independent study. My AP Stats teacher is pretty awesome and sees my interest in st00fz also :)

@Newdle Taking that into consideration, I don’t think you should retake the Math. Score is good enough, and it won’t play a major factor into your admission. Plus, you’ll have to relearn the Pre-Calculus that you forgot and it would be a burden.

@cso1640 Alright, thanks for the reply. I’m just a bit scared because being at the 25th percentile for a school is a bit scary, in my opinion O_o… But again… Correlation does not mean causation.
