Hey, I scored a 780 on the math level 2 subject test. The things is, I wasn’t aware I had been signed up for it until the day before the test so I walked in not knowing what to expect at all and without studying, just hoping for the best. I know I can get an 800 if I study for a month or so, should I retake it? I know some people say it seems bad to colleges because it makes the applicant seem too focused on numbers and scores and other people say colleges like it because it shows determination. Other information you should probably consider when answering this: I am a junior and took this test in the winter, I have already taken the SAT I twice because I am substantially worse at the SAT I (only got a 660 in math and 600 in reading comprehension with a 630 in writing.) and plan to take this test twice more, once in June for practice and once in the fall of my senior year for real. The problem with my SAT I is that I have no time to study for it because I took 8 AP’s this year, a regular class, and a college class. But I will have time over the summer and will probably increase my score senior year in the fall to around a 2200. (I’m also concerned taking this test 4 times will look bad to colleges, but I’m not taking it 4 times because I am obsessed with the score, I’m taking it 4 times (3 times before senior year) to get used to the test and to have practice before I take it ‘for real’ fall of senior year, I haven’t studied for any of them yet because of a complete lack of time.) So, considering all that, should I retake the SAT Math level 2 for that 800? I would have time to study because I would take it fall of next year, so I could study over summer. Thank you for all who reply!
A 780’s not going to keep you out from any school, nor is an 800 going to get you in. My suggestion would be to focus on the SAT 1, and probably not take it until you’re consistently getting 20 points higher than your minimum desired score. Taking it 4 times is excessive, even if it’s just for practice. Better to practice in a place where colleges can’t monitor and see your work, if not because it will hurt your application (which it probably will), then simply for your own privacy.
Okay, also I signed up for the June 6th SAT 1 for more practice but now I am understanding that colleges don’t like you to take it more than 3 times (despite my counselors telling me to take it as many times as possible). So I want to move this test date to the fall of next year so I will only have taken it 3 times and I will pay the 28 dollar fee to do this, but I can’t figure out how to change the date. I went onto the change registration and change test date page, but there are no options to change it to. Can you not change the date to the next test (in the fall) if you are signed up for the last test of the school year (which is the June 6th test)?
