I took the SAT in October and had a total score of 2280:
Math: 730
Writing: 750
Reading: 800

My total score is above average for almost all universities, but is it worth retaking the test because of my low math score? I can probably get it up to around 770, especially if I study. I plan on applying to colleges next fall with Biology/Molecular Biology as my preferred major, but right now I'm thinking about applying too Caltech and I know that 730 is way too low for Caltech (probably even for prospective biology majors).

If Caltech uses Score Choice, then I’d say sure, why not for a math/science heavy school. However, if they don’t, they may frown upon taking the test again to raise your score 20 to 40 points, so I’d use your energy for Math SAT II’s. 730 really isn’t bad at all, esp. with your other section scores.

I took the Math SAT II last year and scored and got a 790; should I factor that into my decision?

Yes, if you got a 790 on either of the Math subject tests (though they prefer Math 2), I doubt they’d question your math abilities. Have you taken a science subject test too? Anyways in the end it’s your call but I wouldn’t bother taking the SAT again. You should probably get a second opinion though.

I took Bio and Chem this year and I think I did pretty well. Yeah, I guess I’ll wait for a second opinion…

not worth the risk unless you know for sure they superscore and as mentioned, noone’s going to doubt your math ability

just throwing this out there… Cal Tech’s 25th percentile for the Math portion of the SAT was a 780.
