Hi, I'm looking for some advice on whether to retake my SAT or not.

The first time I took it, in January 2010, I got a 2290 (800CR, 770M, 720W). I would likely be able to get an 800 in math the second time and improve my writing score, but I'm pretty sure that my reading score would go down, maybe even significantly. But with superscoring it would still be beneficial...however I don't know if I should rely on superscore or not?

When colleges superscore, they say they only consider your highest scores in each section, but what does "consider" really mean? If I took it again and did worse on reading but better on the other two (let's say 720CR, 800M, 760W), it would bring my superscore up to 2360 but would it look bad that my critical reading dropped so much?

Thanks.

What might look even worse is why you are retaking a 1570…if I was an adcom, I’d wonder if you had nothing better to do on a Saturday morning. For what reason do you think you need an 800-M?

leave it as is. Writing isn’t as important and 1 and done IMO looks more impressive than taking it multiple times

Do not waste 4 hours of your life retaking the test to get 30 points higher when, with those test scores you will get into whatever college you want, and in another year or two, it won’t matter and nobody will care whether you got an 800 on math

Your score is great. Spend your time working on school related activities instead of SAT prep. Don’t think adcoms will put your application in the shredder because of a 720 writing. A 720 writing is still good.

^ It’s not like he would prep. He said he could get an 800 automatically. It is just the question as to whether you want to waste a few hours on Saturday and prove to yourself you can do it.

I think that you should retake. I was in a similar predicament as you- my first sat score was a 2290 (800 CR, 710 Math, 780 Writing) and I took it again and my overall score raised significantly to a 2380 although my CR and writing both went down. My math became an 800. I feel like your writing section is something you can improve quite easily with a bit of studying and there’s always score choice so that even if you take the SATs 5 times, colleges will never know.

And although I may have wasted my saturday, I barely prepped between my 1st and 2nd sat so I didn’t have much to lose.
