Retake SAT Subjects?

I just got my scores back for the SAT subject tests that I took in June:

*BIO : 750
*US HISTORY : 760
*MATH II : 730

and I was a little bummed. Should I retake Math2 and Bio, or take another subject SAT? I'm planning to major in something Bio related at top schools or apply to direct admit med programs.

My SAT I was solid:
*MATH : 800
*CR : 800
*WRITING: 790

Does this make up for the less than ideal SAT subject tests? How important are they in comparison?

Keep in mind that I'll be spending time 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at my research job for the rest of the summer.

I suppose theres October and November, but application stress might be going through the roof

I dream of those scores. If you’re concerned, only retake Math II, since 750+ is considered a good, competitive score. However, you’re math on the SAT I is perfect, so it makes up for your SAT II math score. And yes, application stress is…killer. Perhaps if you study over the summer everyday, for a 45 mins on weekdays, one or two hours on the weekends, you’ll be good. Your Bio is fine though don’t worry about that. Which bs/md programs do you want to go to?

I was thinking about WashU, Case, Baylor, Brown, and some others. Northwestern is out of the question now since I don’t have time to take a chem SAT.

Those are great choices. Why don’t you at least try chem?

your subject tests show your versatility in math, science, and humanities. i think you should devote your time to making a stellar application with powerful essays. i would suggest retaking math II (not to say it’s not a good score, but as said above, a 750+ would eliminate any doubt in adcoms’ heads). good job on such fantastic scores!

I’m incredibly jealous of your SAT I.

If you’re going into medicine or biochem, you should retake bio. I’m in the exact situation - I want to major in the aforementioned, and I got a 750. I’m retaking.

You should retake Math II. I don’t see why you can’t get an 800 if you got an 800 on the SAT and have taken honors precalc.

US Hist is unrelated to your major, so a 760 is fine.

Consider taking Chem if you’re taking the AP class.

@ risubu: I’m actually not taking AP Chem until senior year, so I don’t think that self-studying for 2 months is going to produce a stellar score.

@monkeydudexD: I think that I agree. I’d rather have a really productive/amazing year in research and produce fantastic essays than have SAT subject scores 20-30 points higher than the ones I have now.

@karaokemachine: Where do plan on applying? I considered retaking MathII, but honestly, I’m terrible at math. I don’t really think that an extra 2 months of prep will help me snag an 800. As I mentioned to risubu, I’m not taking AP Chem until next year, so I’m basically stuck.

@everyone: Thanks for the advice!

@tempertrap

I’m applying to a few UCs, Johns Hopkins, U Penn, Stanford, maybe some other Ivies, and some other private schools.

I guess if you’re fundamentally not great at math, it’ll take too much work. I mean, as long as you’re not going into engineering, it’s fine.

In that case, don’t take Chem, unless you’re willing to study a whole year’s worth of AP Chem to get an 800 on the SAT II.
