I was wondering if I should retake my SATs because they’re low even though I have a ACT score I’m satisfied with? I’m aiming for top 20 colleges and I realize my SAT scores are pretty low, but I think my ACT score is at the 25th percentile of top 20 schools (aka acceptable). Should I retake the SATs if I plan on applying to colleges like Stanford that don’t Superscore and specifically require ALL SAT AND ACT scores of all sittings? Thank you!
It looks like you’re better at the ACT so why don’t you take that instead. Your score is already good but if you get it a little higher ~35 then you’ll be a good competetor for stanford. Stanford requires all scores but they will use your strongest for consideration. However if you can be sure you’ll get a 2200+ on your SAT (superscored) go for it.
And stanford DOES still superscore they just require all test scores be sent in.
Personally, if I were you, I would focus on the ACT rather than the SAT. If you received a 33 on the ACT in one sitting, you could likely increase a couple points to make your chances even higher. You’re already at the 25th percentile for some of the colleges with your ACT score, so increasing your chances with your ACT seems more manageable compared to trying to get your SAT score up to the 25th percentile (at least) for the schools you’re looking at. Good luck!
Yes, stick with the ACT. However, I know lots of people who thought their score would rise just by retaking it again, but scored exactly the same or lower. A friend was in the same boat as you with a 33 on the ACT from Spring of Jr year and took it again without studying to receive another 33 in fall of senior year. I would only take it again if you were able to score higher on practice tests or if you have put significantly more time and energy into studying. Otherwise, the stress and expense isn’t worth it.
@Studious99 I totally feel you! I might or might not take it again because I know how much I worked to get that score; I feel like my english and reading can’t get any better and I’m applying non STEM major/planning to pursue a non STEM major in college, so I’ll just think about it for now. I probably won’t end up taking it because I don’t think it’ll make or break my application in the long run. Thanks for your advice!
Your ACT is already competitive at almost every college in the US. If i were you, I would let it go and focus on school & enjoying your junior year - unless you do a prep course, there’s no guarantee you’ll improve the second time.
@ffina23 Thanks for your advice! I will most likely not take any more SAT/ACTs. I think I will choose to focus more on my GPA and extracurricular activities. Thank you again! I really appreciate feedback
