I took the ACT for the first time in April having done a few practice tests beforehand and received a 32 composite. I took it for a second time in June without any additional practice (I may have done a science section or two) and received a 33 composite. Would it be a good idea to retake it for a final time in September and aim for a 34+? Also, if I do score higher, would it make sense to delete the 32 composite and avoid looking like I took the test too many times? Oh, and just to put the scores in perspective, I plan on applying Duke ED. Thanks so much :)

bump…please

Not really

You report your scores. So the ones you report are the ones they see. 33 is very good for Duke. ED should also improve your chances. It’s not worth it to get worked up for another exam when you already scored really well on it.

Thanks so much! Anyone else?

It is up to you whether to retake it. 33 is a good score but you may want to get an even higher score for competitive programs or schools and merit aids. What you should have done is to prepare for the test thoroughly before taking it. Otherwise, it would be just a waste of time and money. There is no reason to delete your first score even if you can. Taking the test 3 times is okay. If you don’t want to show taking it too many times, then do not take it that many times. Only schools that want all scores would like to see all your scores, and you should be honestly submit ALL your scores.

Thank you, that’s very sound advice. I agree, I should have invested more time in studying, but I was very overwhelmed with everything junior year entailed. I am prepared to devote the next two months to intense study. any other opinions?
