Awkward situation-

I've taken classes over again, since I transferred to the Naval Academy, but since they didn't accept transfer classes, I had to retake some courses that I already took.

I took Calculus II at a different uni, and got an A, but I got a C this time around at the Naval Academy.

I took Chemistry I and got an A, but got a B second time around at the Naval Academy.

Will those units still be considered "extra" units even though they are the same class?

I'm trying to transfer into UCB/UCLA under the EECS major for Fall of 2011.

I'll have IGETC and all prereqs offered by my CCC and have California residency and CCC priority by the time I apply.

Also, how will that affect my GPA? Will they take the highest grade earned from one class and not factor the other grades into the GPA? Or just take all of it regardless?

counts only once but they take the average of the two grades

What do you mean take the average of the 2 grades?

As in…

A in a 4 credit course = 16 units
B in a 4 credit course = 12 units

16+12=28
28/2=14

so I would get 14 units in it?

Sorry, double post.

I just found this on their site

For transfer applicants, only the most recent grade is counted when calculating the GPA; degree credit for the course is given only once. Repetition of a course with an original grade of C or better is disregarded; the original grade is counted when calculating the GPA.

[University of California - Counselors](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/resources/askuc/answers/calculating.html#4)

So with that being said, would the grades that I received at the Naval Academy be void, and they would just go with the A’s I originally had?

Is there any representative I can talk to at UCB/UCLA that can verify this, if so, who?

Thanks in advance

If you had had a C originally and retaken it then they would have disregarded whatever the new grade was (a lot of schools do not allow retakes for grades unless they are D or worse).

I’m still kind of confused with that UC statement thought. It seems contradictory.

Repetition of a course with an original grade of C or better is disregarded; the original grade is counted when calculating the GPA.

I originally had a grade C or better. And it states the original grade is counted towards GPA.

But what it says

“only the most recent grade is counted when calculating the GPA”

makes it even more confusing.

You’re right - I was reading it wrong! It does say that if you retake a class where you originally had a C or better they disregard the retake and use the original grade. As you originally had a C or better they should use the original grades from the first time you took it. If you had had a D or F then they would have taken the new grade.

That’s really good - it would have been really annoying to have the more recent grade counted when the original was better.

Actually, what you stated seems correct too!

That’s why I’m so confused.

*For transfer applicants, only the most recent grade is counted when calculating the GPA; degree credit for the course is given only once. *

Indeed, it states my most recent grade (which are a C and a B) would be counted for GPA calculation.

Repetition of a course with an original grade of C or better is disregarded; the original grade is counted when calculating the GPA.

But then it goes on to state that only the original grade is taken if the grade is a C or better in the first place.

I’m trying to analyze this sentence backwards and forwards and it just seems contradictory every way I look at it. I’ll try calling my CCC counselor and see what the say. Is there any way I can contact UCB or UCLA and get an official word from them?

u dont get extra units, they only give u credit for one of them, but i think ur right, if u got a D/F and then retook it, the new grade would count, but if u passed an retook it, the old grade would count

you only get the units from the first time, and you need to make sure it transfers over. sometimes they don’t take all the units
