When applying for a transfer, if you've retaken a class to raise the grade, will the original grade still show up on the transcript to the new school? For example, I got a C in Biology 100 my first semester because I flaked completely on the homework. If I retake that class and raise it to an A, will potential transfer schools still see the original C on my transcript? And if so, is it even worth it then to retake the class?

Also, how closely do top schools (as in top 10) look at High School GPA versus College? If I had a 3.85 or 3.9 in college when applying, would my 3.6 in HS work against me, even if I had excellent test scores and killer ECs?

The most famous line is "it depends on the school". Seriously...it does.

As I look through the requirements for the colleges I hope to transfer to, some strictly prohibited the above (retaking a class) while other's don't even have a sentence prepared for the matter. It's best if you send an e-mail to the school you want to go to. Don't give them your name and what not, but just ask them the what if or the this is how it is kind of questions.

High School GPA for the top ten is probably something big. If you came out of HS with a 2.0 and had a miraculous 4.0 in college, I'm under the impression they'd feel very fishy about it. I'm no admissions counselor, but that's my take on it.

The following courses do not transfer:
*
* Courses completed at an unaccredited college or university
* Physical education or hygiene courses
* No more than three applied music courses (except for applicants to the School of Music)
* Courses for which credit was granted by institutional examination rather than course attendance
* Mathematics courses below the level of calculus (with the exception of a combined course in college algebra and trigonometry or modern mathematics)
* Courses worth less than three quarter hours or two semester hours
* Credit granted through CLEP examinations
*** Courses that an applicant has audited, repeated, or failed
* English as a second language courses
* Journalism courses (Medill students only)*

Perhaps an explanation of the fact that, in High School, my ambition stretched no higher than BYU, Provo would help? Essentially that's it. I didn't try in high school because I didn't have to, and I had a wake-up call in college. I would think it would be obvious by my test scores that I have the brains for it, and wouldn't college gpa say something about my work ethic now?
