Retaking 2300+ is stupid.

Even though his score went down, receiving back-to-back scores of 2400 and 2390 is very impressive, albeit indicative of a perhaps undesirable personality.

My friend’s friend got a 2400 and retook it only to get a 2390. <– did he just do it to mock people?

why would your friend’s friend even care about the sat so much to retake it? to prove himself worthy? I take the SAT to get into college not because I like to

Here is some data that I gathered from the stats profiles here on CC. I looked at the effect of SAT (CR+M+W) on admission at Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

SAT - Accept% - Sample size
2300 23% 22
2310 46% 24
2320 25% 24
2330 31% 32
2340 52% 25
2350 69% 16
2360 46% 13
2370 58% 26
2380 57% 7
2390 64% 14
2400 67% 46

The data is in conflict with the OPs assertion.

^ The data is in conflict with your assertion. According to that table, people with a 2350 have a better chance of getting in then people with a 2350+. That makes no sense. A 2310 had a 46% acceptance rate, but +/- 10 points nearly cut the rate in half. The only conclusive thing about it is that 2300+ is a very solid score.

I want to say that you guys are crazy

Like someone has already mentioned, it’s all about what colleges you are applying to are looking at. If you’re applying as a math major, you should have a 800 Math SAT score or retake. If you’re an English major, your CR and Writing should be decent.

Hey people, ever consider that maybe the reason the guy retook the 2400 wasn’t for boosting his chances in college admissions but rather it was a personal motivation? Is it really that surprising that people enjoy establishing personal goals and want to do it for the sake of doing it? I mean, especially in that situation, it’s obvious he wasn’t going to get any increased benefit from doing so.

By most American standards an 1800 combined score is good. For HYPSM a 700 in any section, perhaps aside from writing, is a disadvantage.

An0maly, I think you are overlooking the small sample sizes. What’s wrong with a little variance?

I received a 750CR 790M 690W(BS!), and I think this would be a good example to retake, but what would you guys think about raising my writing to around 760, but dropping math and CR about 50 points each? (this would give me 2310 superscore)

One should take the test again after an initial score of 2300, but two sittings is more than enough.

hahahaha

kid at my kid’s school is retaking a 2390 to get an 800 on math

ya gotta wonder . . .

Kei

Don’t worry, Kei. That retaking kid was me last year. If you study for a 2400 and get tantalizingly close, there’s really no other option. I hope he gets as lucky as I did.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

great post!

the kid I was referring to REALLY wants an 800 Math

the pursuit of excellence is no vice

congrats

Kei

I see nothing wrong with the pursuit of excellence either, but when “excellence” is a perfect score on a standardized test, I think it’s time to re-evaluate one’s priorities.

I did retake a 2310, but I have a hard time understanding why anyone would need to retake 2350+.

^ go for it.

why would you want to retake 2300+???
seriously that’s not worth it, I would rather spend time doing other things…

wow my last post has no context because the person i was replying to deleted his/her comment/

The entire thread is amusing but christiansoldier’s right:

That’s probably why I retook a 2350 for a 2370 superscore. (I wanted an 800 math too)

Higher Education Professionals | College Board;

According to the College Board 2009 National Statistics: Page 6, Score Distributions:
Score ranges between 700 and 800 are all grouped into the same category, which would imply that the College Board considers all 700+ scores to be somewhat equal. So following the College Board’s logic, a 2300, 2350, 2370 and a 2400 are all about the same. Therefore, the only reason to retake a 2300 is for bragging rights.
