I answered the original question. Don't retake it.

i think u should take it again!

....jk

Yea, you should not take it because a 790 is basically an 800, and plus, on the second time, the next best score you can get is a 790....

Basically, it's a waste of time and not worth the risk

To OP: The best solution would be to take the test AFTER all the applications have been submitted and all the scores have been sent. Then your 800 will satisfy you, and it has no chance of hurting you. Win-Win.

You seriously don't want to let the adcoms think that you are a case of pathological perfectionism. It sure looks like you do have that, but why do you want to reveal that personal failing to the adcoms? Top colleges like Yale are particularly fearful of perfectionists, and with good reason.

JMHO.

I was in exactly the same boat.
I would also really like to go to Yale, and I got a 790 on the mathII last year when I know I easily could get an 800. I decided not to retake it (I still have time to change that, but I think I'm sticking with this.). I was too afraid of taking it and then getting a 780 or something, and I'm hoping that it's true that they'll consider a 790 close enough to an 800.

ok. do you know that they don't look at SAT scores by points, but rather by RANGE??????

therefore, a 780-800 is allllllll the same to them.

Anyone who disputes this.....check Michelle Hernandez's book.

Definetly retake a 790 that is a abysmal score, I dont think any top colleges will accept that, there are so many more people who they can choose from that have did much better. What a stupid question should I retake a 790, no freaking duh you should retake. I would be embarrassed posting that score. Pretty much kid you're a failure in life with that score. Well there is always community college for you. If you even want to be successful you have to be perfect, so you need to retake the 790, and if you dont get it, say good bye to you're future kid.

Ok, it's harsh...but retake it. (But will the colleges know? It might look bad....?)

Because.....

If you got 790, that means you made many errors on the test with one of the most generous test curves.

If you got 800, whether you got them all right or made several mistakes, it sounds about right.

lol @SAT Questions

Good advice.

Hehe, we call that situation "Asian Failure" among Asians.

hm. what about 780s and 770s.

when should you actaully retake a SAT II? only when its below like 760?

IMO, I'd say a 750+ is sufficient. I'd say improving a 740 is "borderline justified"

Yeah, but a 790 says he/she was one of the BEST (top 98%?), of the total test takers.... A 790 on ANY test, even a test with a nice curve is very impressive.

i have some questions.

right now, i know for sure through CC and my friends that i got 8 questions wrong on the chem for sure. which would probably get me a 780. i know for a fact that im capable of an 800. should i just cancel my score and take it in october? or would it be wayy to big of a risk?

vicariousparent has the best advice. If you want to do it for the personal challenge, then take it again after you're accepted into college and have already submitted everything in the way of score reports that your chosen college will need.

Personally, I think you'd be better off taking free tests, as another poster suggested, and then donating the money another test would cost to a worthy cause, because the expenditure of funds, though low, is still simply to satisfy your ego about 10 points. Do you really need whatever validation those extra 10 points would get you?

I was in the same boat last year. I took Math 2C in May before my pre-calc class had covered the material and scored a 790. I was tempted to retake for the 800. I didn't.

College Results:
Accepted to 8 schools including Amherst, Bowdoin, and Dartmouth.
Waitlisted at Cornell, Williams
Rejected at Brown, Stanford

Maybe I would have done better with an 800; with several schools, though, the 790 was good enough. Hopefully this will give you some idea of how (un?)important those extra ten points are.

I ended up NOT retaking it. It's just not worth the time, even though I had already paid for it. A 790 is still impressive so I'm not worried. I hope others in the same situation will consider the same thing.

Well, 790 is pretty good! You don't need to take it twice... i don't know how the admission officers will think of you... but here's a sad example... one of my friends took SAT I and got 2130 the first time... she retook it again and got 2170... ( her goal is 2200 ) she then applied to uni. but was REJECT by many of those she applied... later her adviser thought it was probably she took SAT I twice and didn't make a big difference... don't know if 790 or 800 can happen like this... think carefully before you retake it! Best luck >.<

wow...no comment.

Since it's probably a pride issue for you [are your friends getting 800s?] then DO retake it. I know I would have retaken it, since I have friends that got 800s that weren't the brightest in the batch [and I would have gotten annoyed that they would get them b/c of classes not on their own].

However, to be pragmatic, I don't think you should waste your time / money on that. It won't matter for college, but your parents will get bragging rights from an 800. But seriously, this is just for your future, not for you or your parents to brag about in the future.

So seriously consider if you want to put the work in.
