Hello all, I am a CC student from California aiming for UC’s and USC for Business or Econ major.
I will submit my application this November 2016 and planning to transfer to the accepted schools next fall 2017.
That being said, I am taking this Calculus 1 class during Summer 2016 and I am getting a C.
Getting a C in a core class like Calculus 1 will be the last thing to do but I had a family feud (I had to move away from my family and had to support my self during this semester) so it happened
I am planning to get a F and retake this course in Fall 2016 and replace it with an A, which will protect my GPA cuz getting a C is a death to one’s GPA.
Question I have is these 2:
When I submit my application on November 2016, that is the GPA with my F still counting since my grades from Fall semester is not graded yet so that F is still not being replaced with an A. Then, if that grade with F is lower than a cutoff GPA for my major at certain UC's, will my application be automatically excluded from the admissions system even before getting a chance to update my GPA after Fall 2016?
Taking calc 1 in Fall 2016 and calc 2 in Spring 2017 will have any negative effect on my chance to transfer to any of these universities? (USC, UCLA and UCB)
I know they allow students to take classes until the next spring semester but taking those 2 core classes at the last minute worries me.
Appreciate any comments and words of advise. Thanks!
1. For the UCs you update your application in January, so the grades you receive in the Fall are included in your application. So as long as you retake in the Fall, you'll be ok for the UCs.
USC, does not recognize academic renewal, and they will count your F. If you retake the class in the Fall, then they will average the 2 grades. So if you get an F and an A, they will count it as a C.
If you’re dead set on tanking the class, then at the worst you should opt for a D. With a D you can still retake, but it won’t hurt you a little less than the F as far as USC is concerned.
Thank you 2016Candles.
After reading your comment about USC and their policy to average out the two grades, I went to the counseling department of my CC to ask whether my F will show on my transcript permanently.
Fortunately, she said it will only show as a W after I retake the same course in Fall and finish it with a better grade
Again, thank you for your insights. you are much appreciated!
@Ohm888 I wish I could retake a class with a C grade, but C is a passing grade so I can’t retake the class at my CC.
At the same time, I don’t really have to worry about the F grade anymore, since my counselor told me that it will change to a W after getting a better grade in Fall semester Thanks for your help!
I think you should recheck that policy of an F turning into a W. I’ve never heard of that. CCC counselors are not always the best source of reliable information. I think you should contact your school’s Registrars office and ask. They are the best source of info about what happens with grades and transcripts.
Do what you’d like, but I’ve been on this site long enough that I’ve heard all kinds of horror stories from people getting mis-information.
@smk798 If you CC grades using minuses and plusses, you can retake a C- grade for the UCs (not a C) and it will erase the C-. I don’t know about USC. I agree with @2016candles, you’re talking about an F, so should really verify with the source.
Academic renewal is recognized by the UCs for undergraduate admission. If your only goal is to maximize your lower division undergraduate GPA to transfer to a UC, then it is fine.
However, there are a lot of things to consider in this case, such as graduate school or private schools. Think about it carefully, it isn’t the end of the world if you get a C in a class.
