Retaking a class that you have AP credit for

Hey all.

Way back in high school, I took AP Physics B, scored a 5 on the exam, and placed out of intro physics (PHYS2010 & 2030).

However, this past fall I decided to retake PHYS2010 because I didn't really remember the material well and felt that I really should have a firm grasp of physics for my major (chemistry).

I was told by my association dean and by past students that if I were to take a class that I already had credit for, my AP credit would be removed from my transcript and I would receive a normal grade in the class.

After consulting a most recent transcript, however, my AP credit is still there and it reflects that I have repeated this class. Furthermore, the grade I received in PHYS2010 has no influence on my GPA. It seems that SIS thinks I took the class on a "credit/no credit" basis even though it shows my grade that I received.

I was wondering if anyone who has repeated a class that they already had AP credit for could let me know if they had the same issue. I plan on going to graduate school and am a bit worried how my transcript blatantly shows that I "repeated" a class even though I never had taken a physics course at UVA.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I was told by someone that the registrar's office has to manually remove the placement credit from my transcript.

Thanks for your help and happy holidays.

I’d check that out. I think it’s a glitch. My son had credit for several APs coming in, as most accepted UVa students do if offered at their hs. Like you he choose to retake Physics (despite an A/5 on the AP) because of his major (mech’e), and the concern that his hs class may not have been as complete as it could have been (they covered everything he’d done in hs by midterms and were on to new material, good call). His transcript shows a new grade, for credit, which is included in his GPA. He understood that by taking the class he’d loose the AP credit, but not show up as a retake as what you are seeing. Also, premed students have to retake any APs that are prereqs for med school as they are required at the university level. If they showed up on their transcript in the way you describe that would cause a problem.

I’d speak with someone in the registrars office to see how you can get this addressed.

Yeah, it’s not that big of a deal, just talk to someone in the registrar’s office calmly and they’ll fix it for you.

Yeah, I am glad I retook the class…there was quite a lot of material that I learned in the college course that was never covered in high school. I am also glad to hear that it shouldn’t appear the way it currently does on my transcript.

Thanks to both of you. I’ll make sure to follow up with the registrar’s office in January.
