Retaking a class

Okay, so I took a math final today and I didn't feel like I did so great. The policy is that you need a 70% on the final to pass the class ( I know sounds crazy), but I'm afraid I didn't even get a 70% :( I might have to retake the course again in Spring, just how does this look to the UCs? I'm kind of scared they'll see I didn't pass, but I will be retaking it if I didn't... so would they just look over this?

BTW - Even if I failed the final I would still get a B in the class... It's just the policy that is holding back my grade...

Dunno, I can give you my opinion but my words are futile. Ask each UC’s you applied.

Hmm, I guess that is the best option. I’m just afraid they might rescind me on the spot or something…

Have you already completed a UC transferable math class for the entry requirement for admission? If this is the first UC transferable math class you’re taking then your admission could be in jeopardy. The one thing that the UCs really aren’t lenient on are completing 60 units and completing the Math/English requirements. If you’ve failed/withdrawn from an English class or Math class without satisfying the requirement and plan to complete it in your last semester right before you transfer then admissions officers are typically wary of accepting you. What happens is they end up flagging your application because you’re in jeopardy of not being eligible to transfer and because you’re completing the course in your last semester you don’t have a chance to get your application unfledged before they make their decision. If your math course is just a major pre-req, it looks bad that you’ve failed, but you still have time to make it up so you should be ok for most UCs.

And just a little side note, it’s pretty commonplace to have to get a 70% on a comprehensive final to pass the course, especially for a math or science class. Typically the information in those types of courses builds on the previous chapters as the course progresses, so you’re expected to remember everything. Especially since the introductory stuff is usually much easier than when you cover at the end of the course.

Well, I guess that’s the problem… That was my first one. If I have to retake it again, I don’t know how it will affect me =(

It depends where you plan to transfer. It’s probably not acceptable at most of the of middle tier UCs and definitely not UCLA or Cal. You might get away with it applying to UCR or UCSC, although it looks like you’re already transferring from UCR. I know someone that was rejected from USCB last year because she took a W in an English 102 in Winter and tried to finish it in Spring right before she transferred and they wouldn’t let her because of the previous attempt. She ended up passing in Spring, but obviously that was too late because it was after admissions made their decision.

Well I found this on UCLA’s website:

Completion of the following course requirements by spring prior to transfer:
One transferable math course that has a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher.

It said I can take it my spring quarter prior to transferring… do you think that’s alright then?

You will have a big problem on hand if you get an F in the class, regardless of whether UCLA specifically allows you to complete the math requirement in Spring or not. Most of the UCs will rescind your admission because of that F. There is no overlooking it.

Why are you so worried though? The fact that you should have a B even after failing the final means that you did pretty well all quarter. Why would you all of a sudden expect to fail this exam out of the blue? What math is this anyway? There should be a curve of some sort right, or did your professor specifically state that an raw score of 70% is required to pass?

It’s just math 5… I was really not feeling well the day of the final. I won’t get a F in the class, probably a NC. And I will have to retake the class. On the syllabus it states you need a 70% on the final to pass the class. So I probably will get a NC and have to retake it.

So it’s a graded class if you pass the final but it turns into a P/NP class if you fail the final? That’s so bizzarre.

I’m not sure how it works… even if I fail the final I have a B…they can’t just give me a F can they? That’s not correct as I didn’t have one. I think all they can do is give me a NC or incomplete
