I got a D in the first semester of precalculus honrs, I got a C second semester. Since then I’ve taken CalcAB (B both semesters 5 on AP test) and I’m currently taking Calc CD(B first semester for sure). I’m retaking the first semester online just to boost my UC Application gpa (raises it by .125). My questions are as follows, if I retake the first semester of precalc honors online will my online grade replace my old grade FOR GPA REASONS(I understand that my D will still be reported). Also, It is my understanding that I could report my grade in this online class as late as the end of December, is this true?
Grade changes after submission of the UC application on November 30th will not be considered unless you get a grade lower than a C in a Senior class or change a Senior year class. This needs to be reported to the UC’s but not grade updates unless you are asked for a supplemental review when you can submit updated grades.
Your D will not be replaced in your GPA since your grade will not be available by the Nov 30th application deadline.
From the UC Website:
You can log in to your application to review and, if necessary, change your telephone number, e-mail, mailing address or SAT, ACT, TOEFL, or International Exam Scores. You can also apply to additional campuses if they’re still open.
Freshmen: If you change schools, add or drop a course, or fail to earn a C or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify the UC Application Center by email or postal mail. Your correspondence must include your name, UC Application ID number and your signature (if you mail a letter), and will be available to all the campuses to which you applied.

No where does it say you can update grades after you submit your application. If you want a definitive answer, call UC Admissions. (800) 207-1710 (within the U.S.)
Just for certainty what if I did finish before the deadline and the grade was available?
If you have a final grade by Nov 30th, then you can submit it on your application. The reason that 12th grades are not considered in admissions decisions for the UC’s, is that most applicants will not have any final grades by the deadline so they cannot be reported.
According to the UC website:
UC uses all “a-g” courses taken between the summer following 9th grade through the summer following 11th grade in calculating a student’s GPA.
Since the grade will be during your Senior year, the UC’s will see the repeat grade for the D but may still not use in their GPA calculation since it does not meet the above listed criteria. I would call and ask for sure.
Also are you retaking the exact same class on-line, since the grade will only be replaced by retaking the exact same class?
Yes I had it approved by my GC
Ok well after emailing UC admissions I was told that it won’t effect my gpa at all. Should I even take the course now? Im about 25% done with it but it’s been really annoying and frankly I’m frustrated doing work that’s so basic and demeaning. Since the course won’t count in my GPA it would only serve to show that I can do the math, which I already did by taking Calculus AB and receiving a 5 on the AP test and by taking calculus CD at SDSU.
If for any reason you receive a supplemental review or you are waitlisted at any of the UC’s, you might want to submit a Mid-year grade report which would have the repeat grade. It definitely could not hurt to finish the semester class to have a better grade on record.
Should I finish this course by December so private schools can see it? Will they even care since I’ve already taken 2 years of Calculus afterwards and did well? The effect on my gpa for private colleges is .07 so I don’t know if I even want to do the class at all for private or UC’s
UC’s have grade validation for Math courses while Privates do not. A D is a small blemish on your record and yes you have made up for it by showing you are capable of doing well in higher level classes but the D is still on your transcript. It is up to you but with the competitive nature of college admissions I think it could only help you.
OK so I guess I will complete the class somewhere in mid December, submit it with my common application, then add it to my UC application (I emailed a UC admissions person and they said I could do this).
