Retaking a Pre-Calculus Class to Boost GPA

Hello
I got a C plus in my Pre Calculus Class for my second semester of my junior year. Is it okay if I retake the course and get an A?

Talk to your guidance counselor. Ask if you can re-take the course and, if so, how it would change your GPA. Also ask how it would look to colleges if you re-take pre-calc rather than take the next level math class.

you should also look at whether colleges will recognize the new grade. There is no requirement that colleges use the GPA reported by your HS in admissions and in fact many (if not most) will recalculate it using their choice of weighing, excluding classes like PE, etc. If you are considering the UC system, for example, retaking the class is a waste of time

@happy1 Okay.

@mikemac Okay.

What is the next math class that you would take? Are you eligible to take that class after a C+ in pre-cal? What is your college major likely to be? Will you even need math past pre-calculus? Why do you think you got that C+ grade in the first place? What exactly do you intend to do differently if you are allowed to repeat?

Personally, I’d advise you to spend some time reviewing the pre-cal materials with tutorials online at Khan Academy and PatrickJMT and see how well you start to handle the varios topics before you commit to your next math class.

@happymomof1 I am taking AP Statistics next year. I am eligible to take that class after a C+ in pre-cal. My college major will be Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. I need math past pre-calculus. I was supposed to get a B minus in the course but my math teacher altered the grading system at last minute. If I am allowed to repeat, I would do an online course over the summer and boost my GPA.
Thank you for your advice!

I think it is a good idea, not for the gpa boost but to solidify your knowledge. I think Algebra II is a gateway or weeder course for higher level math. If you do well you’re likely to do well in higher courses, if you don’t you’ll probably struggle in higher courses, end up needing remediation, or just not progress to higher level courses.

^ I agree. Retake for the Math knowledge. Ask your GC how would it affect your GPA. In our school district, one may retake a course online in summer and the grade will be replaced by the new one, better or not.
