Hi, I am a math major student. I have 4.0 gpa with repeating 2 Ds( one of them is major course), Do i have the chance to get admit by UCLA or CAL? And How UC look at retaking class? Hope you guys can reply me. Thx
Your comment lacks information and is kind of hard to read. Hopefully you write better than you do on here.
Did you retake and pass the classes? Or are they still D’s?
Yes. I retook them and got As.
Well if you got As, that’s a good sign. And you can explain why you failed those classes in your essays or additional comments.
You’ll want to look and see if your programs at UCLA and UCB use the grade from the first attempt for both courses, for just the major course, or not at all. One D, or two, will obviously hit your GPA hard if they use the grade point from the D. Especially if you’re talking about 4 or 5 (semester) units that you see with math courses.
You can certainly still get in, but will depend on the rest of your application.
Thank you for answer. Can you please tell me where I can find the information for my programs at UCLA or UCB ? Actually, I asked a counselor at my ccc, she told me the Ds will not affect my transfer GPA, UCs just count the As after I retook them. Is that right?
I really don’t know. My major at Berkeley, if I failed a major pre-req and retook it, they would use the first grade.
Every school is different. I don’t know where to find the exact answers though. Talking to the schools themselves is your best bet.
Okay. Thank you so much.
Did you take those classes at a California Community College? Did you fill out forms for academic renewal? Then those D grades will not be counted in your GPA.
^^ even if a specific major/school says the first attempt will be used?
@Happy2Help yes. I am currently at a ccc but I didn’t do the AR. Actually my unofficial transcript shows my GPA is 4.0, but I am not sure is that transfer GPA or not.
@jw77777 CCCs usually show the transfer GPA and cumulative GPA. I cannot understand from the local CCCs how you say you didn’t do AR yet your GPA says 4.0. You may need to ask a transfer advisor about this. It sure looks like they did do AR for those classes.
As for how UCLA looks at courses with Ds or Fs that have been retaken for better grades, they do not seem to always count against you. It could depend more on impacted majors that are more competitive. Math is not impacted so it may be that those courses are going to affect you.
What you can do to bolster your position is to register for TAP and take honors level courses.
Good luck!
I got two Ds in chem and math same semester. retook them later and aced them. I got Ds because of personal issues… I wrote a sentence about it in the others section…i got into ucla with them, so its not the end of the world. However, these are all case by case but good luck to you
