Should I?

I'm in my senior year, and I got rejected by UCSD so I'm going to try transfering from a community college. I'm majoring in computer science and minoring in mathematics. This year I'm taking AP computer science AB and AP calculus BC. I'm going to be taking both AP tests, and I know that I'm going to pass both. Since this is going to be my focus later on, should I retake the classes in community college?

I'll probably skip calculus AB, but retake BC.

Also, another question:
How much of the curriculum is similar between AP courses and GED/ major prerequisite courses?

You must get a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam for it to count for the second Caculus course. Also if get 5s on them I do not think you shoudl retake, but if you are get 3s you should.

So it only counts if it’s a 5, but I have the option if I get a 3? That didn’t really make any sense.

If you get a 5 on the AP test, you will receive credit for completing the equivalent college-level calculus class. If you try to retake it at community college, your transcript will indicate that you retook a passing course (which UCs DO NOT like and will not give you credit for).

If you get a 3 on the AP test, you will not receive credit for completing the equivalent college-level calculus class and need to retake it to receive credit.

For calculus if you get a 3 or 4 it only counts as the first calculus course, if you get a 5 it counts as the first two. The other couses will vary upon which colleges you want to get into. Some colleges do not like 3s, some don’t even like 4s. Well since you plan tto use computer science as a pre-req, you should retake it if you do not get a 4 or 5…and maybe even if you get a 4 if you plan to apply to Cal and UCLA.

@feefee

I got a 4 on my calculus AB test and they told me I can skip math 150.

Maybe the college courses/names vary, but I know at my cc Math 150 isn’t transferable anyway. I think it’s just one of those preliminary courses you take to get IN to a transferable course.

Also, who is this “they?” DO NOT TRUST COUNSELORS. Seriously, talk to the schools directly because AP policy does vary UC-by-UC and counselors don’t always steer you in the right direction (in fact they can easily steer you in the wrong direction).

Also, if you truly know the material and don’t need to take a course, you’ll be able to challenge any math class you want at a cc and receive credit regardless of your AP score.

Math 150 is part of my pre-reqs.

You said, “if you truly know the material and don’t need to take a course, you’ll be able to challenge any math class you want at a cc”. So if I told them that I knew all of calculus, could I go straight to linear algebra?

…

I got a 3 in microecon AP and I had to retake it in college because they only took 4 or 5 for credit

bulgarian, i challenged a class, and im my college the process was something like this:
-submit petition for credit by examination before semester begins
-talk to the professor of the class & take the final within the first week of the semester
-talk to the professor of the class i wanted to get into & make sure she/he was okay with me starting a week late.

hope that helps.
p.s. at my college they let you do this “challenge” thing with only a limited number of credits, you probably want to check that with your school also, you may not be able to do it with all your classes.

if you plan on going to grad school, they’ll probably want you to take those classes again, especially if its for your major
