for the students enrolled at Rice right now,

can we take classes that we have ap/ib credit for? Let's say you get a 4 or 5 on ap chemistry, but want to take the intro chem class, can you? Is this true for all courses u get ap/ib credit for?

Yep! You can retake classes. It's not a problem. You'll just eventually get a letter from the registrar saying, "Oh, hey, we saw you took intro chem in addition to having AP credit in intro chem, so we had to take the AP credits off your transcript."

I took AP Calc AB my senior year. What do students normally do coming in with this typical background? Are you supposed to take Calc II or do a fair number retake Calc I? I would consider myself competent in math, but how much of a "weed out" course is Calc I or II?

Rice doeesn't really do the whole "weed out" thing. There are two semesters of calc, IIRC, and your AB credit would count for the first of the two semesters. If you understood most of the stuff in your AB course, you'll be fine. You'd probably just start with the second semester of calc. No biggie.

You'll work all this out during o-week, too.

if you dont feel like you understood anythin in calc ab, but were jus prepared for the test, will the academic advisors pressure u at o-week to start at the second semester of calc? are the final decisions of what classes ur gonna take really rest on you for the first year regardless of like ap credit?

Oh, no. There'll be no pressure. If you say, "I don't feel comfortable moving on," then they won't be like, "YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE SECOND SEMESTER!!!" In fact, when you write out what classes you want to take, the probably won't even question it in the first place.

The "final decisions" of what courses you take the first year aren't particularly final decisions. Take one or two more classes than you intend to end up with, because as a first semester freshman, you can DROP any class you want up until the last day of classes! You can just walk away, no harm, no foul.

There are no placement tests, with the exception, perhaps, of some of the language courses.

You should know how confident you are with calculus when you arrive. Read the course descriptions of Math 101 and 102 and see if you are confident about the material taught in 101, if so, take 102. If you're iffy and planning to go into a science/engineering field, it might be wise to take 101 as a review before moving on to 102.

what's up with the pass/fail thing at rice, i mean i read about it but does it basically mean that i can take a class pass/fail each semester as long as its not a required course for my major?

You 'earn' one P/F use for each YEAR in attendance at Rice.
You may use up to one P/F designation per semester.
You may NOT pass/fail a course that is required by your degree plan.
If you change a P/F-designated course back to a grade, you can use that P/F again.

So, in your freshman year, you only have one chance to P/F because you've only been enrolled for that one year. If you don't use it, then you have up to two available for your sophomore year, but only one per semester. You can't use it for a course required for your degree, so that means you can only P/F electives and distribution courses, for the most part. It doesn't hurt to P/F a course because, if you like the final grade, you have a window in which you can remove the P/F designation and it's like you never used it.

It's one of the more confusing rules about Rice classes. Make sense?
