Hi CC,

From my understanding, I can retake classes where I got a D and the UC/CC would take the higher grade. At the moment, I am thinking about purposely failing a class in order to take it next semester. In the long run, I would have a higher GPA, but does the UC campus hold the D against me or does the D make my application look bad?

I retook 2 F’s and a D and I got in everywhere I applied. Retake it and you should be fine

I think LA and Berkeley may look at the classes you retook and it could effect your chances, but all the other colleges basically ignore them. I got into UCD, UCSB, UCSC, and UCR with two F’s and two D’s retaken, plus a whole bunch of F’s from many years ago that were removed from my GPA via academic renewal. My close friend also got into UCI (I didn’t apply there) with several repeated courses.

“For transfer applicants, only the most recent grade is counted when calculating the GPA; degree credit for the course is given only once. Repetition of a course with an original grade of C or better is disregarded; the original grade is counted when calculating the GPA.”

That applies to UCLA and Berkeley as well. Just anecdotally, I replaced two Ds before being admitted to UCLA, so there doesn’t seem to be any exception to the policy for UCLA. I can’t speak for Berkeley, but I’m sure there have been people in a similar position.

You should be fine. I think what hurts the most is getting a C.
