I've just received my november sat 2 results, and while everything has gona quite well, i've ended up scoring a 670 in french... i've looked quite a bit through this board and foudn that most ppl think that as long as one scores in the 700s, everything is fine... however, french is my fourth language (german native, latin since yr 5, english since yr 7 (lived in australia though for quite some time) and then french), so i was wondering if you think that if i make clear within my application that french is my fourth language, the 670 won't hurt my chances or would you rather recommend me to retake the test in january?
thanks a lot for your opinion!

Well I'm not sure why you chose to take French since you would probably have scored higher on one of the other foreign language tests, but 670 is an excellent score for a non-native speaker and good enough to place out of Harvard's language requirement. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

While 670 is good enough to place out of the foreign language test, I'd suggest taking the Latin test. With French, you're probably competing quite unfairly with native French-speakers. With Latin, the field is more level. My S placed out of the foreign language requirement with only three years of Latin.

I think when you're applying to Harvard you're not supposed to take a SAT subject test in your native language, so I don't think you're competing with native French-speakers. That said, I think 670 is really good, and I agree with marite. Latin is probably a good choice!

You're not supposed to, but in reality, many native speakers take the SATII in their own language; this is why it's harder to score high in Spanish, and the curve is quite brutal. My S did better with 3 years of Latin than with four years of Spanish.

Oh really? I didn't know about that, sorry :). Isn't it a bit of a disandvantage, then? It might make you look like you're going for the easy way or something.

It's conceivable that if Harvard students can't submit tests in their native language that Harvard may forgive a slightly lower score, but the truth is we can't be sure. So I'd concur with Marite that it might be worth your while trying out the Latin test - particularly since no one's native language is Latin. It can't hurt you. They'll look at your best three scores.

Agree with the advice to try the Latin test.
