Yes, don’t mention anything about malpractice anywhere. Sick family? Meh. But your extensive experience with direct patient care is unique. I would go with that. Maybe even add a personal story or example that touched you during this experience.
Ok wow I did not expect all these replies. But some seriously good suggestions! I dont remember who suggested it, but yes I am actually planning to take the MCAT in January. I’m not taking any classes this semester because its too late to apply to 4 yr colleges. And yes CC is not the best way to go in terms of upper division science courses so after my MCAT I will enroll at a 4 yr CUNY. My practice scores last year were always around 508-511 so hopefully I can get back up there and do even better. As for the whole thing about reasons on applying to medical school, I already explained it in an earlier reply, I decided on medicine when I worked as an MA. Just because I have a history of malpractice and cancer in my family does not mean I’m going to put that on my PS. In my PS I talk about two instances during my time as an MA that really made me turn to medicine. Obviously I’m not going to medicine for the money. That’s a lot of time and commitment towards something to just be in it for the money. It’s ridiculous.
Unfortunately, I did not know that AAMCAS will not accept updated transcripts after verification. I thought AACOMAS did accept updates? Does this mean I have to individually update schools on my grades? I also called up some schools and did my own research. Not all schools screen out sGPAs below 3.0. Another applicant called 81 schools and directly asked and some said they only screen for cGPA/MCAT.
I know a formal SMP is the way to go but I cannot afford 50k-100k. DIY postbacc seems the most time-efficient and cost-efficient right now. Hence I really was looking at backup careers in healthcare if this doesn’t work out (thanks to those giving me advice about the nursing programs!) As of now I’m really just studying my ass off for this MCAT.
Someone also sent me a link to Goro’s guide to reinvention, it was a great read, and thank you to who PMed it to me! According to him and many others, sometimes reinvention is rewarded, especially in some DO schools. I think I’m going to speak to my undergrad advising dept to get more clarity on this. There are a lot of different opinions here and I wanna make sure I take the route with the best chance regardless if I get in or not.
I know I’ll be hoping for you to get it. We need dedicated doctors who love the profession for all it entails, not money or prestige or whatever. Sending you best wishes from here!
AMCAS does not allow students to update their application once it has been verified. The only info you can update on AMCAS is your contact info.
Updates for MD programs have to be sent individually to schools–and many schools do not accept updates.
AACOMAS may allow you to submit an updated transcript if you have entered that you have in progress coursework on your application. However, not all DO schools allow AACOMAS to forward the updated information to them. Please check because school policies vary. And be aware that if you indicate that you have coursework in progress, a school may hold off reviewing your application until the update has been received.
