Retaking same course at a different college?

Received an F in Business Calc at Los Angeles City College. I'm moving to Orange County where I'll be attending Orange Coast College. I'm retaking Business Calculus there. If I end up getting an A, how will the UC's calculate that? Will the F not be factored into my GPA? Obviously, it's still going to be there on my transcript.

Does your previous school have a grade lineout option? Where if you retake a class somewhere and submit your transcript to a previous school, they will give you Academic Renewal which removes the F from your GPA calculation, but the schools you apply to will still see the class on your transcript.

@killmyentourage - Not that I know of. I’ll have to ask.

Anyone else want to chime in?

just get academic renewal on that F… and you’re good

Transfer classes which are equivalent are considered the same regardless of the college that you attend and the naming conventions, retaking because you failed it will simply mean that the old D or F grade is ignored on your transcript.

Say you took ‘Math 412 - Business Calc’ at LACC got an F.
The Next Semester you take ‘Mathematics 23 - Calculus for Business’ at OCC and get a B

Both Math ‘412 - Business Calc at LACC’ and ‘Mathematics 23 - Calculus for Business’ transfer to the UCX as Math 20, as a result, they see them as the same class regardless of the course titles and numbers. When you retake it, you don’t need to deal with academic renewal, they will just calculate the new grade as being a B. Your D/F is completely ignored in the GPA calculation.

(Source: My own transcripts and the UC GPA that they calculated)

Thank you so much for your input, feedayeen. My GPA will be at a pretty healthy 3.7 if I retake this course at OCC.

I have a similar issue as you, larinaga. Feedayeen, I notice you have great info on this. When you say that larinaga does not need to deal with academic renewal process, does this mean they are to just input all grades from all institutions on the university apps, and it will automatically disregard the F? Or is larinaga to just put in the new/passing grade, ignoring the F? Any info helps, thanks!

@ Nazzzz - I don’t believe you can ignore and replace the ‘F’ on the UC application when inputting the grades. However, when the UC’s see that you retook an equivalent course at another institution, they’ll disregard the non-passing grade.

When you input grades on the UC app, you have the option to put the letters AR in place of the F but only do this once you have officially changed it with your school.

Anyone else want to chime in?

Courses repeated at a different CCC will replace the previous failed grades, but the process is not automatic (someone at the UC needs to adjust the calculation manually). To ensure the F is not counted in your GPA, you should put a note in your UC application in the Additional Comments section listing the two courses and indicating that the repeated course replaces the failed course.

A better option is to ask LACC for “academic renewal.” You will have to report the “AR” on the UC application, but it ensures the failed grade will not be erroneously counted in your GPA.
