Some of you may have already seen me post something similar to this, but I feel that this post/thread probably belongs in this sub forum as Columbia is my top choice.

Question:
-Should I retake the SATs? Does anyone ever even think about retaking SAT 2s?
-If I do decide to retake the SATs(im pretty sure I will score at least 100 points higher without studying at all), should I put alot of study time into it? Although I feel that retaking+studying for the SAT may help me out a bit, the cost of doing so doesn't outweigh spending the time to focus on my essays instead?

Info about myself:
-applying as junior transfer
high school GPA: 3.408 unweighted, 3.592 weighted
SAT(took 3x): best combined was 1760(710 math, 500 verbal, 550 writing)
high echool ECs: i volunteered(not going to go into detail), but I didn't cure cancer or anything
College GPA(currently attending a CC)- 3.39( first semester was a 2.4-2.5 due to some difficulties, but every semester after that has been a 4.0)

I guess if I wasn't clear enough in my question above, what I'm really trying to get at is:
-If I decide to retake the SATs, how much time should I spend on that? Because the time i spend studying for the SATs could probably be used instead to focus on writing my essays(which I'm hearing from alot of ppl is a very big deciding factor compared to SATs)

If you want to get into Columbia, a 1760 is going to hurt you. While an essay and other portions of your app could potentially outweigh this, those other things will have to be absolutely stellar.

Raychacha is right. Also, I tend to think that SATs are a benchmark of sorts- considering how competitive students are right now, most have to have a “certain” SAT score before they consider ECs, essays, etc. (not to say that ECs/essays are not a big admission factor)… so yes, study hard, and retake the SATs. if you break 2000, you should be in much better shape if you have a good essay and ECs to match.

I mean, you should still apply, but, a 3.592 weighted and a 1760 SAT tends not to be Columbia material. I’m assuming a 3.592 is like a 92, right?

But I was under the assumption that high school records didn’t matter as much as your college record. Weren’t high school records+SATs geared towards predicting your college performance? But since I’m already in college…you get my point?

And note that im a junior transfer, not a sophomore…
I guess I’ll register for the SATs…
