Retaking the SAT: Help! I'm on the fence!

Hey guys,

First of all, I just want to thank you for taking a look at this post and offering your advice. Its really appreciated.

Anyway, I, like many kids on CC, am a hopeful applicant for some of the best schools in the nation (Wharton, Harvard, Stanford, Williams, etc.). I have taken the SAT two times. The following is how I did:

First try: Total Score 2170 - CR: 780, M: 690, W: 700

Second try: Total Score 2160 - CR: 700, M: 760, W: 700

Superscore: 2240

My question is, should I retake it one more time to try to get my score above a 2300? I realize that a 2240 is a very high score already (and I'm very happy with it), but I want to be as competitive as possible come admissions time (btw, I'm a senior).

One reason that I feel I can do better is because I have a lot more time to prep. The second SAT I took was 1 month after the first, because my school offered it for free.

I realize that not all schools allow you to superscore, but many do. For these schools, I feel that, psychologically, a 2300 looks much better than a 2240, even though its a matter of a few questions.

So CC, what do I do?

Oh, and one last question: for regular decision schools, will I be able to take the SAT in December, and still send in a superscored report?

Thanks!!

Bump. Anyone?

I don’t think retaking the SAT is going to make a big difference in your application. You scores thus far are pretty consistent, just with differing distributions.

60 points more on the SAT will not make or break you.

Thanks for the reply. I am leaning toward not retaking, but a part of me still feels like getting a 2300+ puts you, for lack of a better term, in a higher tier.

Bump 10char

Sure, take the test again, if you’re not busy.

On your application, Just report the date but leave score blank. Also, make sure you put down the schools where you want the score to send to on your test.

Thanks for the advice! Any other opinions are welcome!

No need to take it again. No advantage to a higher score. Concentrate on your schoolwork.

Penn requires all scores, so admissions committee will know how many times you took it and how you scored each time. Repeated tries won’t impress them.

If you think you have what it takes to take the SAT a third time, then go for it! I’d just add that if you were to take it again, you should aim for a 2400 and not settle for a 2300.

How many SAT II’s have you taken? If you haven’t taken 2 of those already, you might want to look into it.

I took Bio (M) and did pretty well. I’m taking Math II in October.
