Retaking the SAT with a 2340

I'm considering retaking the SAT (which I got 2340 on the first time). Good idea? Bad idea? I've heard all sorts of doomsday comments about the unpredictability of the test, but I actually find it pretty easy. Not to be overly cocky, but I think I have a reasonable shot at a 2400 the second time. Is it worth it?

A 2400 -retaking just for kicks - now that would take guts

You should definitely retake

From the film DIRTY HARRY (1971) with Lt Harry Callahan after stopping the bank robbery, and with his Magnum aimed straight at one of the robbers wounded on the ground:

CALLAHAN: "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

BANK ROBBER (laying on the ground but within reach of a weapon)

"I gots to know."

Well... the admis. officers will ask you why you retook it... believe me; they will.

The applicant stated the reason as "I think I have a reasonable shot at a 2400."

That is a viable reason

jus be sure that u really really do think u'll do better than ur 2340, cuz then it would be a waste and go against u if u retook it and did worse than ur earlier 2340

What would be the point? Already a great test score, admissions would think you either have nothing better to do, or you are obsessive compulsive, or you cannot handle not being perfect - all of which do not make for a very appealing candidate. Also, the stats from the first year of the new SAT shows only 238 could score 2400 out of nearly 1.5 million. Feeling lucky?

" Well... the admis. officers will ask you why you retook it... believe me; they will."

what d'u mean they'll ask you? theres no question and answer session that they have with you before making a decision.

Are you a MAD genius? :)
Your score is amazing! Don't bother! I agree entirely with zulu.

No, it's not worth retaking at all. A 2400 won't increase your chances any more than a 2340, really. GPA matters more. Spend the time working on ECs or your essays.

What do you do with your free time?

How did your scores break out? If you need to bring up, say, the math by 60 pts from a 740, then yes, it is reasonable. If you have 780's in all 3, then no, there's no reason to take it again.

Don't bother--your score is already fantastic. I think it's probably more likely that you'll get a lower score if you re-take. I think they give you this infomation on your score report: "Of students who scored XXXX and retook the exam, X% scored higher, X% scored lower, X% scored the same." (S decided not to re-take after seeing this--chances of getting a lower or the same score were greater, so not worth the effort to retake)

Yeah, that's pretty much how it went down. I got 790 on writing, 800 on reading and 750 on math. I figure if I retake it and get 800 on math, it'll be a 2390 overall and I'll be in business.

how many questions did you miss on each section?
if you missed 1 question in each section, then that would have gotten you a 2390 on january's SAT...meaning if you tried again and got the exact same number of questions right on the next test, your score could still be different, and possibly better, depending on the curve for that specific test
same deal if you missed more than 1 on each section...the curve for the next test could make your score different

and your math skills have probably improved from the last time you took the test--math skills can't get any worse unless you dropped your math class in school (which I doubt you did)...that makes it worth a try because your math score could improve, even if you exclude the effects of an easy curve

a 750 can definitely be improved. look at this retake as an attempt to raise your math score, not an attempt to raise your total score. a 750 isn't as good as it can possibly be, espcially for the top schools, and it can easily be improved by studying...good luck! a 2340 is fine, but if you look at it from the perspective of a 750 math, retaking seems more reasonable.

the most prestigious colleges (which i assume you are trying out for) will look at a 2300-2400 as mostly the same. They know if you get a 2300, you already have the ability to get a perfect.

but then again.. it does feel nice to get a perfect score on the SAT's, wouldn't it.

why would you want to retake it? a 2340 is good enough for ANY school! taking it again and getting a 2400 would lose its value somewhat, and besides, how do you even KNOW you'll get a 2400? scoring lower is really bad.

don't retake

OMG you have to retake
ivies reject everyone who doesnt get a perfect score
EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I retook a similar score because my Math was 750 and i wanted to major in math at HYS. I was sure i needed 800 to be judged competent. Interviewers thought i was a loser for retaking it, until i explained it well...and only because i did very well the second time. be careful. you don't need it.

i hate people like you >:O
